As far as the chamber rash is concerned if you get it magnafluxed and there are no cracks I think you could polish most of that out and it would run OK. You might get carbon hot spots. That might do it. The chamber and valves cleaned up really well. Is that the chamber next to where that piece of HG was missing?
 
great, now it wont start, the timing is perfect, but I think the fuel system needs primed.

I keep trying ways, but nothing is working
 
great, I had the cam dots lined up wrong, I had the 1 dot aligned with the 2 dots....on both sides-Why is there 2 sets of dots?!?!

and does anybody know if the 5vz is an interference engine? I hope not, otherwise I might have a bent valve or 24, but it runs good and has all around power like before.

I got all the accessories and belts back on, new coolant, and ran it for a bit.

took it for a drive and notice a weird tapping noise coming from the right bank of valves.

I'm uploading a video of it right now, so itll be up in about 30 minutes.

I kept all of the valve spacers in order which I took them out and they all went to the right place.

will it possibly go away? new oil change probably? I lubed the lobes and the keepers and the cam holders before, and during assembly to reduce wear.



anybody got an idea?

I had the same symptoms with a 97. I removed the heads but didn't see a problem with the gasket. I replaced the gaskets and now have noise also.

It also has a rough idle.

Any thoughts?

i know on the 22RE if you overtighten the valve cover bolts it will cause the rocker arms to contact the valve cover. not sure if that would make a difference for the 5vz, but its worth a shot

After reading another post, it could be the camshaft gears. I didn't use a service bolt to hold them aligned and that could be the problem.

The engine runs great. Lots of power just a rough idle and the tapping at idle.

I am going to remove the valve covers to see.

Do you know how to realign them?

I forgot to update my thread, oops

I found out that I didnt put the service bolt in the hole because it showed them later removing the gear. And I was only removing the cam... so I thought about not putting the screw in.

Well, there are 2 gears on the exhaust cam and they are tensioned away from each other to reduce gear noise.

Pull the exhaust cam out, put it in a vice and crank the gear down and place the bolt where it goes. then re-assemble.

and the rought idle is probably air in the lines, mine eventually went away after I pumped up the fuel system, then let the air bleed out through cracking one of the fuel rail connectors.

Well after removing the exhaust camshaft(s) and winding the tension on the gears it purrs like a kitten.

Thanks for the info. I hope it makes it for another 150K miles.

I think the correct term is "I hope it makes it another 250k"
 
Not sure if I have the same thing going on here but I have a replacement engine from a 98 in my 96 4Runner, 3.4 4x4. I recently developed a massive stutter when hitting around 3800 RPMs, but otherwise runs and drives and idles terrific. I haven't noticed any coolant loss at all. Just when I go to hit passing gear and hit 3800+ RPM it feels and sounds like a stutter box at the drags. No CEL at all, anybody have a thought?

3rd - 90 degrees
4th - 13ftlbs

the 4th pass doesnt make sense to me, but I got those out of the dealer handbook for the 5vz engine.

and you do not have to replace the head bolts after you remove them, or on any toyota's.

The 4th pass is not a 4th pass, it's a 4th step (it applies to an ninth bolt that is in the form of a lighter grade bolt with an 8mm allen head.) The first 3 steps apply to the eight torque to yield bolts. Step 4 does not.

That is an interesting first time post, on a four year dead thread. I guess it's still good information.
