Blown HG, or am I paranoid?

probably just jinxed myself..................

Not saying there might be something to this, but, I had the HG problem and the PO I bought the vehicle from was anal about service. He did everything Toyota said including changing coolant, trans fluid, steering fluid, brake fluid. He even took it to the dealer to have them replace brake light bulbs.

Hmm, good info. Thanks.

If true for all carefully maintained 4Runners, then there is no real way to prevent this? Sucks. AGAIN: If it happens (to me).

I meant to say "Not saying there might be not something to this"

Well, it's still good info. I remember someone deducing that old (acidic/basic can't remember) radiator fluid could eat away at the seal. Didn't sound too far fetched. Let's not forget that MOST do not change their radiator fluid during the life of their vehicle. This isn't to say that it only happens to older/higher mileage 4Runners b/c there have been low mileage cases. Still, it IS a design problem that most don't see. Geeze, you would think Toyota would've figured out the HG problem (unless it's a business decision..........RE: use cheaper HG to save $$$, by the time it fails, it's out of warranty..............but what do I know).

For whatever it's worth to you, the dealership left the engine in mine when they did my head gaskets. If it were easier to take them out, they probably would have and still charged me the full, quoted amount but they didn't.

how much did that set you back $$$

I think it's time for a class action lawsuit on Toyota.
This is an all too often course of events for what seems to be 90%b daily drivers.
Don't get me wrong, I am NOT one of the people that just slap a suit on someone over nothing but this certain event happens all the time and all too often for no reason at all.
What sucks is that these are great vehicles and due to the failure from Toyota, we have to foot the bill on something that should not be an issue....especially when UNDER 200k miles on the motor!

i was living in fear and eating rice and drinking nothing but water for about 2 months lol..

if anyone is curious, this is what the state of my radiator was when i pulled it.

was that the stock rad that had to be replaced? or the spectra rad from your earlier rad replacement write up?

Head Gasket vs Timing chain

Not trying to hijack thread but they won't let me post a new thread and i can't find anything about this

87 t4r 22re 4 cylinder 180k miles.

Trying to figure out if I need to replace my head gasket or timing chain kit.

I noticed a "tic tic tic" with my rpms for about a week. Couldn't figure out what it was. 3 days ago my thermostat gauge went straight from cold to running temp and back down. So I knew i needed to replace that. On the way back from the parts store with thermostat it started idling really bad and died. Next day fires up no problem until it gets warm. Same thing rough idle and dies once warm. Coolant not too low. Milky residue under oil cap, oil milky, white smoke.
So naturally I figured it was a head gasket.

Ive also heard that the timing chain could have rattled against the water pump and caused the same problem and that it was rare for it to be a head gasket since its not a V6. Thoughts?
