Aren't you going to hate buying expensive kids Blu ray discs even more? Seriously any kind of disc is on the way out so I doubt anyone will ever come out with a player for cars. The closest thing would be to get a laptop that has a Blu ray player and use that. An External USB Blu-Ray player might work too but the best way is to rip the disc and save the video file on a thumb drive and use that, no more discs to fool with, lose or get scratched!
DX has Blu ray players for $102 if you want to try one.

Can't say I agree with that...have you used a tablet lately...or a smart TV with download capability?
Solid state drives (memory drives)...both HD and thumb are getting larger (GB wise) and cheaper. They already have a solid state drive at 1 TB.
Yes, any kind of moving media is going out...you can boot from a thumb drive, you can get a panel PC with no moving parts (those of you in the automation industry know what I'm talking about).
Also, with ultra high definition TVs coming/here (4000 vs. 1080), it will make Blue-Ray obsolete.

To the OP...not sure what kind of system you have...but if you have say RCA type video and audio inputs to your system...maybe you can get a 'cheap' tablet(s)...download the videos to them. Then I believe you can get an adapter to interface the tablet to your DVD system.

yes and while it's incredibly badass it's also the price of a nice blue-ray player plus about 40 blue ray movies lol
At a MAJOR cost. The large flash drives are selling for about $2 per gigabyte. A blueray disk sells for less then 10 cents per gigabyte. So there's a huge cost difference.
Second is longevity. If you want to keep you family pictures or important documents, then I surely wouldn't be putting them on a flash drive.
A couple of years ago, I would totally agree with you, but the newer tech out now and coming soon makes that a invalid point...the longevity point. Disks, especially Blu Ray or DVD can be just as vulnerable...scratch the top side, and it is pretty much toast...or left in a vehicle on a hot summer day (I raise my hand).
To be honest, I back up my important data on both...CYA!
But for the original OP, this should not be a issue...
As an Software Engineer manager ...and working in the field for over 30 years... I know what I'm talking about. The technology MAY be better in the future..but it's not even CLOSE to where it needs to be. Might be in 4-5 years...but not now. And then when the technology is capable of replacing some disk-type media...it usually takes another 3-4 years after that. So we're talking close to 10 years. It might be sooner..but not right now.
On my home and work laptop I've removed the disc caddy and replaced it with a 256gb SSD. If I need to burn a disc...I have one on one of my servers in the basement.
Software distribution is still being delivered by disk. Most people these days download software. But there's still people out there who are still using dialup modems and even at 56k it's too slow to download software like Office.

Over 12 years working in the ASIC industry...Application Specific Integrated Circuits...last company I work for was AMD (formerly ATI...formally ArtX...the people who working on the first Game Cube for Nintendo) in Silicon Valley, CA...San Francisco Bay area for you non tech types. At ATI/AMD, I tested new GPUs (i.e. Graphics Processing Unit...Radeon series...which has static, dynamic and flash ram internally) while still on wafers on multimillion dollar IC testers (Agilent). So, I'm well aware of the current and near future nanometer low voltage technology the foundaries are putting on silicon. Currently, been working in the automation industry for machine controls/servos. I deal and have dealt with HARDWARE of all types.
I agree with you the first time...solid state media is not perfect...but neither is moving media. For the average joe and for most of the industry, solid state is perfectly fine...and in some case even better...you think that moving media is going to survive a hot, humid, dusty environment at 50 degrees C?
Solid state is perfectly mature in its current state to deal with just about all applications and storage demands.
Now there are two things I'll give you...for now...price and security. Oh, and I'll give you capacity for now...it is hard to bet a standard hard drive above 1TB. I don't believe the OP is concern with security, and I don't believe he'll need anything close to 1TB for storage.
Shall we get back to the originally scheduled program???

Never said that SS media isn't good. In fact I LOVE. The only thing I pointed out...was that SS is NOT at the state where it can replace DVD or Blue-rays. It may be in the future, but NOT NOW. And I'd NEVER use a DVD or Blue-ray in that environment. Never made any such claim. And 99.999% of disc media users surely wouldn't - so why even bring it up. It's a moot point. That type of environment accounts for less them 0.01% of all computer users.
The POINT is..that disc media is going to be around for a while. And I surely wouldn't bet on SS as being the Future. There's new technology coming out that may make even SSD out of date.
More then 20% of our population does NOT have access to cable or wireless communication. There are even area's in this country which can't even receive Satellite. Their only form of electronic communication to the outside world is via land-line telephone.
There's an area in NH about 20 miles from where I live that is in a valley...They are a small community that the cable company hasn't run a cable to the area...No cell towers within 10 miles (and they are in a valley so it would have to be closer then 10 miles anyways)...and because of where the mountains are..they can't receive signals from the satellites either. It became a big deal a couple of years ago when the FCC forbid the local TV companies from broadcasting a analog signal. Now they have no TV either. The phone line is too slow to broadcast a TV signal.
And there are HUNDREDS of little pockets like that across the US. And even hundreds more that may just have cable...but no cell...or cell but no cable.

I totally know that...living here in east Tennessee in the southern part of Appalachia. It is a shame how the government left them 'high and dry'.
Shipping is one aspect. If it was cheap and easy to ship...netflix would be all over it.
The other thing right now is long term storage. I have CD's that are over 20 years old and going strong. Don't abuse them...and they'll last 100 years. SS...while very good and has improved drastically over the years...isn't proven to be that reliable. I'm sure the technology will improve enough that it will be some day..but it's not there now.
The shipping aspect is related to cost...you can burn over 100 disks for the cast of one comparable flash drive...even the Walmart specials. You lose a disk...no big deal...you lose USB drive...doh!
However, still can't agree with you on the reliable statement...cost aside...there are solid state storage devices available now that can store data reliably just as well as moving media. Anywho...

I think you may be on to something there. My Samsung Galaxy S-2 can output HDMI to play movies on an HDTV with just a small adapter plugged into the micro USB port so if he has a way to play HDMI he won't even need anything but a cell phone!
Eh, have you look at the new laptop lately? They're all missing the build-in DVD Rom. You still need them once in a bluemoon but that's why they have USB drive.
