...I might do that as a stopgap until I can buy a new rear bumper with a swingout. I hate having a spare taking up all the space in the way back.

I built my own bolt on swing out . Some day I'll build a bumper and put this on my moms 4Runner but in the meantime it works pretty well.

I managed to find a discontinued CBI Premium fold down hitch tire carrier.

I do not run it 24/7. It looks sweet, but honestly kinda rattles laterally left to right. I've thought of several very simple solutions, just haven't executed any of them. For now, my oversized spare just barely fits in the stock location - so the hitch carrier is kinda just for looks at the moment.

I can see myself using it 24/7 when I get an aftermarket rear bumper. Ideally, I'll use the CBI for a while after the bumper, with hopes of one day welding up my own hinged tire carrier, then the CBI will be sold to someone i'm sure.

My plan, if running one full-time, is to add additional struts that tie into the hitch mount, or similar, to stabilize it.

My Hitchgate does not rattle at all. I've been running one for almost a year now and I just completed a 5,000 mile overland trip with it. It is well built and plenty strong.

However, it does not play well with our hitch setups. In my opinion, the factory hitch on a 3rd Gen sits wayyyy lower than it should. This is especially true if you have the factory welded hitch and the "hitch flip" mod is not possible.

Our hitches already act like a skid plate offroad and the Hitchgate only makes this worse. Mine extends pretty far from the bumper...and since it sits so low it only makes matters worse. I only bought one because I found it for cheap on Craigslist and I like the idea of being able to use it on my next truck. Spending $1500 on a custom swingout for a truck that's 17 years old didn't make sense to me.

Why buy a hitchgate from Wilco when you can buy the entire bumper and swingout for $200 more.... Doesnt make sense. Wilco is smoking funny stuff...:crazy:

This is the exact reason my bolt on is temporary . In fact , when I was building it I tacked everything up and quit for the night and came back the next day , looked at it , cut it up and did the hitch flip and rebuilt it.

Few more pics. Definitely adds some length beyond what a swingout rear bumper would have. But for the price I got it way cheaper than rear bumper with swingout. I think most swingout bumpers that I have ever seen are $1300 plus but perhaps the poster above knows of a much cheaper rear swingout.

Bought during a Tacoma World group buy. I dont think you need the very large hitch racks...just the solo. It also has enough room to carry 3 gallon Rotopax (pics show the 2 gal on there).

Do you have plans for this? I'd love to build one of these for myself but don't want to get rid of the OEM bumper so this is exactly what I've been looking for
