Borla Muffler..

I've read multiple threads in regards to the muffler compared to others, and I think I'm going to go ahead and purchase (the 2.5" one).

My question, though, is does the muffler have to be welded on, or can I connect with something like U-bolts? I've only heard of other users welding, but I wanted to see if I can make this a DIY if possible..

Shop should only charge $20-30 to weld it on. Maybe $50 on the high side. And the stock pipe is 2.25" so you'd have to get some adapters in order to make it a bolt on deal. Be easier to have it welded.

If you want to make it bolt on, there is no problem doing that. Using something like this,

But remember you need something to go OVER or INSIDE your existing pipe. So you have to be careful what you buy. It's probably simpler to get it welded, but not necessarily better. OEM's don't always weld the muffler, although increasingly they do in order to speed installation.

Well if you buy a welder you can still make it a DIY AND youll have a welder to use for later DIY projects. Welding them is usually the best way to go, ive seen a couple mufflers disconnect that were bolted on (albeit they were installed incorrectly)
 
Man after hearing these prices I'm glad I stood up my local muffler shop on an appointment to w led mine on. They were going to charge me $80 to do it.....

The stock pipes are actually like 2.40". It's a very odd size. The muffler just slips right over the old pipe and welds on.

Love it, as Mufflers go its well made and the sound is decent, not loud but not totally quiet either.
My main interest is reliability and hopefully at least slightly better mileage while not sounding like a garbage truck.
I think the Borla does that, and I chose this particular Borla because it is the largest thus quietest that will fit the 4Runner.

Little bit louder than stock especially if you are giving it gas but at idle it sounds rather quiet.
On the highway its not bad at all, bit louder than stock but not really any obnoxious drone.
BUT even if it did, or your definition of unbearable drone is different than mine you can always completely get rid of droning with a resonator anyway.
