Both rear hub bearing out... drained diff and see metal. Should I be worried?

Both rear hub bearings are gone. They lasted over 200,000 miles on my fourth GEN. I'm replacing them tonight but when I drained the rear differential, I see shiny metal on the magnet and in the oil. Is this from the bearings or is my diff done? I'm a little worried right now that it is the differential. I have never seen metal in the rear differential before until tonight. Is there anything I can do or check?

Has the diff oil ever been changed? If not, that doesn't look all that bad to me. All of what you see there is from the ring gear, pinion, and spider gears inside the carrier. There are seals at each end of the axle tubes to prevent gear oil getting into the wheel bearings and crud from the wheel bearings (or water) getting into the gear oil.

Yes I've had synthetic oil every 60k. It's about due for another change. This is about 50k. I just don't remember seeing that much gunk the last few changes. I was thinking the worn bearings added to it. I've replaced the outer seals too.

Looks normal, fyi, gear oil is supposed to be 25k. If you wheel or tow a lot, I'd change the rear diff every 10k. Just did mine a couple months ago. The rear after 10k was dirty and nasty. The transfer case after 25k was dirty, but not terrible, front was about the same as the transfer case. That's a lot of daily driving in 2wd and lots of wheeling.
