Bought a GX!

I finally joined the pseudo t4r crew last week by buying a 2011 GX460.

It's only been a few days but so far I love the truck. I've been shopping the GX, 4Runners and Wranglers for a few months. I was trying to stay in the $30s so that pretty much meant new 4Runner or used GX, since the pricing on used 4Runners was too strong to offer any meaningful savings.

Reasons I went GX over 4Runner:

1) Extra ~700lbs. And just a little classier. imp:
2) All the features I didn't need but really wanted, like keyless entry, leather, HIDs, levinson sound, heated & cooled seats. :embarassed:
3) Quieter and more comfortable.
4) Full time 4WD.

Things I'm not wild about:
1) Taking the risk on a used car, but not too worried given the GX's record.
2) Premium gas, which is anywhere from 50c-$1.00 more per gallon around here, but really it's not a big deal.

Also it was very difficult shopping 4Runners, colors not available, every single car fitted with extras I didn't want like running boards, paint protection, etc., and every dealer I talked to would not order a vehicle but would only look for one similar to what I wanted. But in the end I'm glad since I really wanted the GX to begin with.

SO I have a GX470 and eventually would like to move up to a gx460 like your. the news ones are not appealing as the current lexus front ends are hideous.

Any insights on owning this model do far?

Couldn't hold out for the 2017 TRD pro any longer.

Does anyone recommend an extended warranty for the GX?

If so, any advice on which one, decent price or good dealer to buy one through?

Nice. I had my heart set on a 4Runner when I picked up my 2015 Trail, but I wonder if I would have gone for a GX if I would have test drove one.

Now that I see some of the GX builds around here, I'm starting to think I would have.

2011 seems like a great year for the GX. I hate the grill on the current model year and the 2011 has all the right options.

Nice ride! I should have looked at the GX before getting a 4 runner, probably. Very happy with my 4R, but I like the standard features of the GX.

While I think the Pro is a nice truck, I personally rather have a GX. If you still wanted a 4Runner, I still think a Limited is a better buy than a Pro. You are only a set of 6112 shocks away from basically the same thing as a Pro.

I just like the drive-train better on that truck which includes the Torsen center diff.

I wheel with a guy that has a GX and its he isn't missing out on anything.

Other than the takata airbag recall, truck is great. I've got a little wheel vibration I need to get rid of but that's it.

Late reply, but personally I wouldn't waste money on any extended warranty on the GX or most Lexus products.

If an extended warranty was very important I'd probably trade in on a Lexus certified model which has one of the best warranties out there.

When I bought, 2010-2011 was the sweet spot for price, features, mileage, etc. Now that might be 2011-2012.

That said, the 2014 refresh has grown on me and I'd probably swap for one if I could for a decent price.

Yeah. If you go to costco it might only be 30 or 40 cents, but most stations it's 30 or 40 cents more from reg to plus, and another 30 or 40 cents from plus to premium. Not uncommon to pull up to a station with $1.98 on the sign and at the pump it goes $1.98 $2.48 $3.05 or something ridiculous. One solution is to run regular but that's up to the individual owner.

I think I am going to sign the papers on a 08 GX470 today. Has 112,000 miles. The deal I am working is that the dealer will replace the timing belt, check and repair any coolant leaks I thought I saw it weeping bottom right of radiator. For 17,999 before Taxes and doc fee.

What do you guys think of this deal?

New here... and my only experience with a Toyota was an 85 4WD pickup (22R) that a buddy rolled for me. Since then, nothing...now I'm curious but need help.
What is the difference between the LX, GX and 4Runner? The first two I remember being massive...now the 4Runner looks pretty massive as well. I'm doing shopping for used, but no more than 10yrs old...although some of the TRD new stuff is awesome.

Just saw your post. Suggest that you have them replace the water pump while they are in there. Good Luck. Our GX was a step up in comfort features from our 4R, but was not as off roadable, stock for stock.

I actually signed the Papers on Saturday. I am having them Replace the timing belt, water pump, and radiator before I take delivery. Hopefully it will be ready by Friday!

I picked up an '08 with 118K for $16k, private party. with ML/NAV but no KDSS. My timing belt, radiator, and alternator were replaced previously.

Does yours have KDSS and/or NAV?

It's at the dealer getting the Water Pump, Timing Belt, and Radiator Replaced. I should pick it up Friday. It does have nav, and I have read the downfalls of that.

After taxes and small doc fee it was $19.5k out the door. Price before taxes was $17,999 the month before they were asking for $18,999. For doing the work they agreed to I decided not to try to beat them down on price to hard.

The services you are getting buttons up most of the major issues. I've read that the alternators like to go out at this vintage too, but you can tackle that down the road. Assuming this truck lasts for several more years, what's a couple grand here and there, right?

I assumed that my wife would want the '14 4R, as it was newer, but she has claimed the GX. She says it reminds her of her LX. The power is certainly nice, and sadly feels superior to my 5th gen, and the rear door actually works better for her, being 5'1".
