Bout to chage the oil in the 4runner myself for the first time....Tips?

Don't ask me why but with the 4runner i've never changed the oil. On every other vehicle i own i do all the upkeep...but the toyota just always got dropped at the dealer.

So i'm going to change the oil on the 4runner saturday. I see the filter is up top which makes it easy. For the V-6 how many quarts of oil do i need? Also, how do i turn off the "MAINT" light?

Any other tips would be great as well.

its easy as ****..honestly...i have a v6 and i believe its 5.5 qts...should be in manual..you can search google on how to shut that off plus thats also in the manual..i kno you have to hold the reset button for the trip in but theres a process..i have to look it up everytime..hahah The only tip i can give you is draining the oil that comes from the filter and piles up in that little spot..theres a rubber piece underneath that..its the drain..you kinda need something small to collect it..you'll see what im talkin about...good luck!
 
You can stuff a 1/2 liter water bottle under the oil filter drain plug between the drive belt and block before you remove the filter and it will catch all the oil. Only 3-4 Oz if you flip the filter quickly after spinning it off.

Yes. 5.5 quarts. I suggest ordering a case(10) of Toyota filters off ebay. They are around $40-$48 a case shipped. Its a better quality filter and the dealer will want around $8-$10 each, by the case off ebay they are $4-$4.80 each. I use the filter for the 4.7 V8s on mine. It fits prefectly, many other members here have done the same thing.

To reset the Maint Required light just push and hold the trip meter reset button with the key in the acc position and turn the key to "on" (Do not start the vehicle) while still holding the trip meter reset button. the MAINT REquired light will flash a few times and then goes out. At that point you can release the trip meter button. Done. It is in the manual.

Easiest oil change you'll ever do. I used to use a mobil 1 filter but have recently changed to the OEM filter. I get mine at the local dealer. I think I pay $4.50 each and they give me a free washer for the drain plug. There's plenty of discussion about which filters are best, you can search and find them. Here's a thread that's got a few pics of the oil change:

There's no need to put it on stands though, my 4Runner has no lift and I can get under it easily. That thread will show you the drain under the oil filter that was mentioned above - it's in the two last pictures. I just use a disposable plastic cup but I use it over and over.

Those are Thai junk. Granted, they're Toyota but they suck. The 90915-2004 is the best filter you can buy. They are made by Denso in Japan. Surpasses all aftermarket filters including M1 and other premium brands.

On the V8 with Dino oil - Toyota says 7500 OCI's are fine w/ that filter.

So you have your dealer import those Denso filters from Japan? I'm not aware of any Toyota dealer that carries those in the United States. OP, if you want to read about the different filters you can read through this thread:

Maintenance light is easy using the trip computer button and a secret handshake. Search on here for details.

V6 oil change is clean and easy. V8 a little more work to get to the filter and avoiding a mess is difficult on the V8.
 
So for those with a stock suspension, do you jack it up or crawl under it? If you jack it up, where do you put the jack stands in the front? Same place the manual says to put the jack to raise it?
