brake/ accel question

When I first start my 4runner and back out of the driveway, I hear what sounds like a click when I first put the truck in reverse. I can feel it in the brake pedal. Sounds like some kind of magnetic lock. I had another car that did something similar and I beleive it was there to prevent someone from shifting while the car was moving and damaging the tranny.

Any ideas?

There's two things that make noises:
1) There's a lock to prevent the car from being shifted out of P without your foot on the brake. A secondary function of the mechanism is to prevent the key from being turned all the way to the Off/Lock position while the transmission is in any gear other than P. If your kid reaches over and shuts the car off (or you did 'cause the throttle wrapped up in the floor mat) you need to be able to steer.
2) The other thing that happens as you accelerate through a couple of miles an hour is a quick ABS self-test which you can hear/feel in the brake pedal.

Hope that helps,
