brake cable replacement

Hi, forum newbie here!

I've got a basic question that may have not have a simple answer.

I'm trying to replace the break cable in my 89 V6 SR5 4Runner. I've got it snaked from the rear, following the old cable line, through the firewall and into the cabin. No real problem there (just dirt!). My big problem is that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to attach or fish the cable to the pull handle. Please don't tell me its as simple as removing the old cable and attaching the new one, its not that easy. The old cable broke with about 1 inch of cable trailing out the handle end. I've tried just about everything; removing the sensor pin, twisting the rod clockwise or counter-clockwise, I even tried removing the whole break handle (I couldn't get the second bolt). Has anyone here had any luck? Is there a simple trick thats not been published in any manual?

thanks in advance,

Bill
