Brake Caliper Clearance Question

Hello. I purchcased the Powerstop Tow and Truck Brake kit and like a dummy I got the 319mm kit instead of the 338mm kit which i need for my limited. I installed the driver side and had to cut the brake dust shield to get it to fit which should have been a red flag that i got the wrong one but I kept trucking. The 18" limited wheels won't clear the calipers now. It is too late to return the brake kit and I have wheel spacers for my future lift and larger tires. Can i just install the spacers to get the wheels to clear and call it a day? I dont think there should be any other issues with running the smaller size brakes but am looking for reassurance

I've been considering upgrading my brakes as well and both 319 and 338 sound MUCH larger than anything I've read. The main thread that I've been reading ( Hard to find Specs, Info & Measurements on 231mm 13WL Tundra Calipers & Rotors ) mostly discusses 13WL (231mm) caliper vs 13WE (199mm) caliper.

Are the Power stop units sized differently than Toyota units?

319mm and 338mm are referencing the rotor diameter not the caliper sizing. The calipers are different sizes as well though. Sorry for the confusion!
 
Yes because of the the smaller rotor the caliper is closer to the hub and hitting the inside of the 18” wheel


Ohhhhh okay I forgot about inside Clearance, I was trying to figure out how you were hitting the Barrel of the wheel lol

If it's an Inside Clearance issue, Spacers could definitely help, but that means you need spacers

The topic topic you're referencing is for 3rd Gen T4Rs, the rotors for a 3th Gens are 297mm and 319mm in diameter, the 4th Gens have a 319mm as the smallest rotor and a 338mm as the largest rotor diameter.

Also I find that topic a bit confusing because the topic starter has a quote that he's referencing in his topic that says.....

"The mechanical difference boils down to the updated caliper being much larger to hold a larger pad....The early style pad (in the 13WE caliper) will be less than 5” (4-11/16” or 199.5 mm) in width; the (pads in the) later update (13WL caliper) is more than 5” (5-5/16” or 231 mm). Both of the calipers have the same dimensions on the mounting bosses......The update (to 13WL calipers) will replace the (13WE) calipers with a larger set that will provide additional swept area and fluid capacity for heavy-duty use.

The math in that quote is not accurate ..."(4-11/16” or 199.5 mm)" and "(5-5/16” or 231 mm)".... 4-11/16' = 119.0625 or 119mm not 199.5mm and 5-5/16'= 134.9375 or 135mm not 231mm.

The only thing I can think of is his math is referencing the width of the caliper in mm for a 4-11/16" and 5-5/16" pad and not the pad itself.

That makes sense. I've got the sport brakes on the 4th gen 4runner and still would like to be able to get better stopping power.

I was also considering the TBU for my 97 Tacoma which is why I was haunting the 3rd gen thread.

Thanks for pointing out the year differences and getting to the math that was not lining up.

Got the spacers installed and the wheels clear the calipers by a lot now. Had to trim down the brake dust shield in a few places but everything now fits and brakes work great
 
Hello, I recently purchased 15” wheels and assumed they would fit. But the brake calipers won’t allow that. Does anyone know of some smaller brake calipers that would work?

15” wheels won’t work on a 4th or 5th gen, at least that I know of.
