Brake controller

Does anyone know where the plug connector is that you connect a brake controller to under the dash? I can't seem to find it anywhere. It could be behind the left panel, but that panel has got a really strange plastic plug holding it in place and I don't have a tool to turn it.

I guess I may have to ask my dealer if no one knows here.

did you look in the manual? At work now so I don't have it handy, but it should definately be shown in the manual

If all else fails, read the manual!:bash: Yep, it's there, with a very hard to dechiper drawing, but at least I then knew where to look. It was about as hidden as it could be, behind and wrapped with black tape on a large cluster of wires. It will be hard to cut loose, but at least I know where it is now.

where exactly did you find the connector? we were going to install our prodigy brake controller today, and we found a connector that looks like the pigtail that comes with the 4runner, but about half the size. or was the one you found all the way on the left hand side up next to the firewall?

i have my tekonsha mounted just above and to the right of the emergency brake and the hood release. it was the best place we could think of.....and we did a lot of thinking.

Doesn't that interfere with getting in and out of the seat? I have had someone hold it there while I tried and I bumped it everytime I got in.

Someone suggested to me to use Velcro and a quick connector(4 pin) to remove it when I don't need it (which is 95% of the time). Anyone ever tried Velcro? This way I could put it exactly where you describe and not worry about hitting it when I am not using my trailer.

I have a Prodogy Brake controller that I use every now and then. I got a new harness from eTrailer and connected it to the Harness Connector (Pic 1) and routed it around to the bottom left of the stearing wheel. I use a short screw and wingnut to attach the mounting bracket through a hole under the edge of the facing (pic 2 shows location). Since the Prodogy doesn't have to be level (or stable) the one wingnut holds it for the short time I need it. It doesn't interfer with my left leg, either. Pic 3 shows my items.

If I had to permenantly mount it it would probably go below the RSCA button to the right of the blank single button.

I historically like to keep the controller on the right hand side(I'm right handed). I found that in an emergency braking situation, I like to steer with my left hand anyway, and I have a better "feel" for the right, and how much brake to apply, when. All that is obviously based on road conditions, weather and the such.

It's only happened a few times, I generally back off and give lots of latitude for anything happening or about to happen in front. Anticipation and heightend awareness will out perform any brake controller.

Out of curiosity, where did you all run the ground out to? I see some good candidates towards the firewall, though those would require putting a larger connector onto the ground wire.

Other than that, in the same boat as far as picking a mounting location. Hate to do a permanent mount as the controller (Prodigy P3) won't be in use 99% of the time... But don't want to interfere with getting in and out. Sure doesn't leave a lot of options. Would love to see pictures of your brake controller mounted for ideas.

If you are using a Prodigy 2 or 3 they do not have to be mounted horizontal. I use Velcro and mount it to the area just to the right of the steering wheel.

I have the P3. I mounted velcro on the right footwell, and on the P3. I keep the P3 mounted only when I am pulling the trailer. The P3 came with a very nice softcase, that is stored in my center console, when not in use. Keeps the underdash looking less cluttered for the 80% that I am not towing.

For those using Velcro, have you found that the adhesive ultimately makes a mess? I remember using industrial grade Velcro for my scangauge back in my Jeep days, but it eventually made a mess. Just curious. I there is also a 3M product that may do the trick but don't want a sticky mess in a year or two.

I used 3M double sided tape against the backing of the Velcro. The Velcro adhesive was crap. Now it's firm and not gooey!
