Brake controller

Bringing up again.... I'm thinking hard about buying an A-frame camper, and it comes with the big 7way plug, and electric brakes. I've pulled a ton of small trailers and boats all my life, but they never had brakes.

On these controllers is it set it and forget it? Or fiddling with it to match current road conditions rain, etc?

Only time you should really need to mess with settings would be if you are using different trailers or if you add a whole lot of extra weight. Other than those two it's just set it up once for the trailer and leave it.

Old thread revive!

Good timing. I just dug out my P3 for this weekend. I bought it for my last vehicle but never took it out of the box. I have a Coleman tent trailer with E-brakes.

When I got the new truck, I also got a new P3...wiring was simple, and I mounted it this time so visibility was a bit better.

If you are using a Prodigy 2 or 3 they do not have to be mounted horizontal. I use Velcro and mount it to the area just to the right of the steering wheel.

Is that correct above?


From the website, the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 is "Designed to work with electric over hydraulic brake systems" this assumes your trailer has a separate hyd system on it somewhere from what I read somewhere. And the website sez mounting in any position is ok.

For my small camper, I just got the P3 which is simply labeled Tekonsha P3, no mention of "Prodigy". Bought this because it supports electric braking OR elec over hyd, (I have elec only on the trailer). instructions clearly state it has to be mounted horizontal, and parallel to direction of travel.

Also I don't see "Prodigy" P3. Just wondered if I was missing something and there was an actual Prodigy P3 that allowed any position mounting, but I guess not.

I'll be hooking this up next few days when I get time.

Go to Amazon and search for prodigy p3 . They run about $125.00. If you look at the specs you will find the mounting instructions.

For those using velcro or some type of adhesive try this: put down some aluminum tape (available at HD or like store. Then stick, glue or whatever to the tape. When the time comes and you want to remove the controller, just pull up the tape removing all evidence anything was there.

Another option for those not wanting to hard wire anything is a Prodigy wireless brake controller, have used this one in 3 different SUV's over the last 7 years. So only one upfront cost for all vehicles.

It requires to be oriented with the direction of the vehicles travel. Side to side has to be level but front to back do not. It will self adjust.

I temporarily mounted mine by the hood release and it got in the way of the e-brake. I will move it to a better location for the next time I need it.

Well I got the P3 installed this evg. Hung it near right knee under the steering area. Kinda tough, took some thinking.

But it worked straight up with my 2007 Chalet Arrowhead aframe camper. I pulled one hub to see what kind of condition the bearings and brake system looked like. Foresee changing the entire hub abd brake assemblies for new set soon. About 150 for all new gear, pretty cheap. After following directions I controller set at 9 power. Definitely helps and gives me confidence I can stop reasonably now.
