Brake Help

Unfortunately for the past year or so i haven't been able to do some of the basic maintenance myself, so I've been taking my baby to a local shop. During a brake inspection they told me that the boots on my pistons in the caliper were going bad and could tear if they attempted to replace just the pad. I am completely confident in being able to do the work myself, but was wondering if that is true or possible. Considering they only took off the wheel and looked without taking the caliper off. Any suggestions? thanks.
