Getting ready to do my first brake job on rear of my 4th gen- new pads and rotors from Camelback Toyota online for $205 shipped. Local dealer whom I usually trust wants to charge $450 for parts and labor and I figure this is a good opportunity for a DIY. I think I've got a handle on the mechanics of swapping everything out but every video or write-up I've seen shows a different spray, lube, or grease being used at different stages. I've gathered that the brake cleaner is a must on the calipers and new rotors, and that I need to spray some disc brake quiet on the back of the new pads. In some videos, they spray the entire rotor with disc brake quiet while others say don't let it touch the surface of the pad or rotor??? In other write-ups they lube every nut and bolt before putting them back in. Some only apply lube to the slide pins???
My question is, what is necessary and what is personal preference or overkill? I'm doing the job myself to save about $250 from what the dealer is charging and have all the tools necessary but don't want to go spend another $50-$60 on unnecessary cans of spray that I'm only going to use once.
Can anyone give me a straight answer on what is necessary at each step, and also recommend any brands?? Also, if anyone has a recommendation for a place to get OEM parts at a better price than Camelback, please include a link.
Your input is much appreciated!!
