brake light problem

hey guys

my 1997 4runner has all 3 brake lights out. I checked all the fuses, replaced the brake light relay and the brake light switch on the pedal and they still do not work and I do not hear the relay clicking.

Any suggestions on where to look next?

how should I tackle this? any other common issues like this?

anyone? I verified the switch and relay are good and I have 12 volts at both the switch and the relay but I do not hear the relay clicking when I release the brake switch.

time to buy a multi-meter and test for voltage potential. if you don't know how to use one then just use youtube for a guide.

You checked the fuse and it isn't blow.
You cannot confirm if the relay is working but there is no sound.
Neither the brake lights or driving lights cause any of the rear/tail bulbs to light.

Next, I would take the multimeter mentioned above and test for voltage potential at the bulb. 99% chance that you will find there is no voltage since the bulb didn't light up but it is worth testing just to be sure.

I am not sure but I would assume the relay you are mentioning is only for the tail running lights not the brake lights, bulbs for both should be in the taillight. So if the relay was actually bad then possibly your brake lights might still work.... meaning that it might not be the relay.

Have you done a proper search on this? Use the search function and try keywords "bulb" "brake light" "tail light"
