I have a 2001 Toyota 4runner and about a week ago my daughter said the powered steering wasn't working. 2 of the belts had come off so I replaced all 3 belts. when I was driving home, I found out my brake lights were not working. The regular lights worked fine. I checked the bulbs and they were good. I then proceeded to check the fuses and they were good. I then replaced the brake light switch. Now my brake lights are not working and my engine will idle only. If I try to give it gas it just sputters and eventually dies. I'm at a loss as to what else could be going on. Any ideas on what could be going on?

OK, let's slow it down.
How did you check the fuses?
Were you checking the "stop" fuse on the left side of the dash?
Do you have power at one side of the stop light switch at all times, and power on the other side with the brake pedal applied?
Let's fix the stop light issue and we'll address the driveability issue separately.

You might check the fuse again, too, before you climb under to get at that pedal switch. It may have blown again the first second you put your foot on the brake pedal. Use your meter and check for power on both sides. There are little holes on both sides of the top of the fuse that will take a meter probe.
