Brake pad wear

I have a 2016 trail premium with 47000mi. I bought it new and it still has the original brake pads. Checked the pads prior to inspection and they measure 6mm front and 2mm rear. Seems a bit odd, or is the normal?

normal. keep stock brakes equipment, clean frequently to prevent seize. you may not know, but T4R using rear brakes more than front. and you are normal driver, no acceleration between red lights, and good distance to the vehicle front of you.

Thanks for the info. 72 years and I always experienced almost 2 to 1 front wear to rear because of weight transfer. I learned something today.
 
Normal on modern vehicles. Old school had fixed pressure split of ~70/30 Front/Rear and would typically see Fronts wear out first. This is because you have more force on the front under braking and so more available traction, you don't want to overdrive the rears causing traction loss and unintended oversteer.

Modern braking systems can modulate pressure front/rear and left/right and under normal/moderate braking it is beneficial to send more to the rear to reduce dive and maintain vehicle composure, but not so much to cause slip.

Oldschool = fixed
Newschool = variable - which enables better braking strategies

I did not want to believe rears wear faster so gathered some empirical data. I did rotors and pads at 75k and just did pads yesterday at 150k all OEM and my results / photos are below.

All rears wore very evenly down to ~0.35"
Passenger Fronts worn down to .42, Driver front had uneven wear between pads, inside (.35) and outside (.44). Inside pad with wear indicator was squeaking at this thickness.

At least in my case rears wore faster. I confirmed both sets start out with 11.5 mm. My measurements include the backing plate thickness which is the same for fronts and rears.

Not sure why my driver front wore unevenly. Rotors seem square, clean and in good shape. Was able to move pistons back into calipers with relative ease and sliding pins were fine. Will check back in after another 75k I guess. :hippie:

the rear pads are smaller than front pads,
so to me, the even wear rate front and back doesn't mean rear brakes are working harder than front.
