Brake Problems

Hey,

I just finished replacing front rotors and pads. I had no trouble except the caliber was very difficult to slide back over the rotor. I almost had to torque the caliper in order for the bolts to align with the holes. I was able to bolt the calipers down, but I am now getting a rhythmic dragging sound from both fronts. I replaced the rotors with premium O'rielley auto parts and I used ceramic pads. I gave taken everything off and double checked my torque specs. I also checked that I didn't bend the dust shield. I followed a post on this forum, but I can't figure it out.

Yeah first guess would be dust shield for sure. Other than that, it sounds like the rotor is out of round or soomething>

Ya, I was really hoping it was the shield. I actually jacked it up and you can here it catch especially bad in one spot when you spin the wheel, but a solid dragging sound is heard the whole time it spins. I drove it again and it almost sounds like it is worse when I turn the wheel. I am lost, if I can't figure it out I guess it's going to the shop.

Is this only on one of your brakes? Maybe one of your calipers are seized?

Are you sure you didn't get any junk caught between the rotor and hub? Maybe some rust chunks left over?

I had no problem compressing the calipers completely, and the caliper and rotors are virtually rust free. I don't think they would have seized on both fronts.

If there was rust caught up between the hub and rotor would this smooth out or would it always cause problems?

Cut that darn dust shield out! They're nothing but rock traps. I'd work the caliper pistons in and out a few times a grease them up. Just take the pads out and using the pedal, push the pistons out till they hit the rotor, apply grease and C-clamp them back in, repeat as needed. Good luck
