Brake Replacement

So I've got 45000 miles on my truck and have yet to replace the brakes. I live in Colorado and with the hills the brakes are used a lot. I stopped regularly and tried to push down on the brake petal further but could not at all pretty much. They stop me fine, but I'm about to go on a 4000 mile road trip. Is it time for a replacement?

I measured and it looked like I had maybe 1/8 inch left front and back at the most. Right now my brakes are squealing constantly. There is no resistance when pressing the petal until suddenly there is a ton of resistance at the very end. What should I do?

I would replace them, better be safe then sorry.

A friend of mine owns 2006 BMW 330 XI and was told by his mechanic that he would need new brake pads at the next oil change. As he is driving on NJ Turnpike one of the pads fell apart and jammed. So I would not wait, rather do it now.
