I just put the usual bilstein shock/fj coil spring lift on my '05 4runner. Drove it for a couple days before the alignment just to settle the suspension - didn't have any issues. Took it to the alignment shop and drove it back home later that day - no issues. The next day I was exiting the interstate and slowing down for the stop light and my brakes started surging. They weren't pulsing or vibrating like they would if the ABS kicked on, they were surging - as in, getting really strong for a couple seconds, then weaker for a couple seconds, then stronger again. After I came to a complete stop the VSC, Trac, and ABS lights all came on and stayed on the rest of the drive. When I got back in that evening to drive home they had turned off. On the drive home they came back on, but I did not have any brake issues. Again, the next day when I got in it to go to work the lights were off again.
So its been about a week, the lights haven't come back on and I only had that brake surging experience the one time. Does anyone know what could have caused that? I was thinking maybe a wheel speed sensor not working and thinking the wheel locked up so it engaged ABS but that's not like any ABS I've ever witnessed. Felt more like the brakes giving out temporarily then grabbing again temporarily. ABS, to me, is more of a vibration in the pedal.
Some notes - I did have the battery out for a few weeks while I put the lift on and worked on some other things. I tried the zero point calibration just in case but jumping pins 4 and 14 did absolutely nothing. Just saw a thread that said it might be pins 4 and 12 for a 2005, so I might try that. Also, I checked the calipers and they did not seem seized, and were replaced in the last 50k miles by the previous owner.
