Hey, i am new here and new to working on 4 runners or any sort of suv for that matter. I have plenty of experience working on smaller cars, but i need some help. Yes, i searched and found nothing.

I have no idea how to get the front hubs off of my 1990 4wd v6 auto 4runner, and i have been trying to figure it out since yesterday but no one seems to know how or have the info on how to do it. Haynes sucks, the toyota dealership here only had an exploded view of the parts, which is nice but doesnt help. A technition there told me there was a little retainer ring or clip, but definately not! I have the wheel off, the little grease cap off, the small bolt in center under the cap is off, the nuts around the center of the hub are all off, but the plate that they hold on will not come off. It looks almost like i need some sort of special gear puller like tool to get it off, but i dont know. Any help would be GREAT!

I am also alittle confused about something i read earlier today, i think it was some sort of car and driver review of used 4runners or something. But it said that the 1991 4runner was the first year to have a full metal roof and the 1992 was the first year they had the spare tire under the rear of the vehicle, but mine has both of these and its only supposed to be a 1990 model, i am just assuming they were wrong?

Thanks, it was the cone washers that i was having a problem with.

Why would you want to convert to manual locking hubs? Are they actually better or just simpler? Ive got 240,000 miles on mostly OE parts with no problems, even had 35s on it for a while and im not easy on anything i drive.

Manual hubs are prefered by some because it allows you to drive around without your cv shafts turning (unless you need 4x4), so it minimizes wear and tear. This is not much of an issue with a stock height vehicle, but becomes especially important if you have a large lift that would cause your CV angles to become excessive.

A better way to remove your cone washers without denting your hub with a hammer is to take a soft punch (brass or mild steel) and a hammer, and tap on the end of each of the studs that the cone washers are on. They'll pop right out.

Use never seize when you put the cone washers back in. It will make things easier for next time.

thanks, thats sounds like a better way to go about it, i wouldnt have just gone to wailing on it though, i know better.

Actually the vehicle is lifted some, and i need to replace one of the front half shafts as it sits right now. How much does the hub conversion cost?

I am also having trouble with the 4wd light "clicking" on and off at random times, not often, but when it does, the 4wd will actually try to engage if i am moving slow enough. I am assuming its a wiring problem but i have yet to go at anything with a multimeter when its happening, any ideas? I would have thought that the 4wd couldnt engage unless i actually shifted it into 4wd but somehow it does anyway, i have no idea how this tranny 4wd system work. Otherwise the 4wd works fine in high and low.

Just so you know, i havent caused any wiring problems, the guy that had the thing before me put a bunch of stupid stuff on the car and botched the wiring for the radio and obviously some other things in the dash.
People should have to take some sort of class and pass a test before they are allowed to start modifying their cars in any way!

A used set of manual hubs goes for $50. Make sure they are for an IFS truck (86 up), hubs for solid axle trucks (85 + older) look the same but won't fit.
