July 14th 6:25am I was driving in the freeway going below 50m/hrs, there's at least 5 cars distance from the other car,I started to slow down and stepped on my brake but my 4runner went faster. I pumped the second time and stepped harder on my brake but unfortunately it didn't stopped till I hit another vehicle. I was so scared. Now my truck is at the collision center and still waiting for legal dept. of Toyota to do an internal inspection. They are too slow to address the problem. I signed already an EDR form so that they can inspect but still they are giving diff. excuses and it almost a month already. Just want to share my scary experienced. Lastly, the airbag didn't go off.
Thanks. tgg4150

Yikes. I would have posted here and many other places immediately to get Toyota in gear. Hopefully you are physically fine. If that happened to me, I'd never drive that brand again.

Wow ....... nice first post!
Did you get hurt? I surely hope not!
Your not supposed to pump the brakes with ABS.
Your sure your foot didn't slip off pumping the brake and hit the gas?Do you have pics of the damage?

First I've ever heard of a 4Runner gas pedal sticking. Especially since they are made in Japan and not the same as the recalled ones built over here.

Good Luck and I hope it all works out.

I have a problem with this one. He said it went faster when he hit the brakes, not just brake failure. Considering it's his 1st post I'm calling some sort of shenanigans here.

First post, yes. But do a search on his screen name and you see he is online talking about the 4r a tiny bit. Writing style is the same as well. About right for a Filipino immigrant if my educated guess is correct.

As for car speeding up, after hitting brakes, this may be an illusion because you are barreling towards a crash.

I'm interested in Toyota's findings. I wonder if anyone else here suspected that their car did not stop, would you be willing to let Toyota get their hands on it before you call a lawyer?

If this account is to be believed, I'm not sure he was pumping but instead released and slammed his foot on it again because there was no brake response. I imagine I'd act similarly in same situation.

Not sure if this sounds like a gas pedal sticking rather than the electronics coming into question.

Good point about slipping off brake onto gas. Pics would help in at least believing a crash of any sort took place.

I'm really sorry you were in a crash and hope that you are alright! It's really scary when a car's safety features don't work how they're supposed to, especially when in a situation between life and death. This is the first time I've heard of braking issues with the 4Runner as well. The failure of a brake to engage when your car is barreling toward another car may seem like your car is accelerating when it's actually not (as one's mind usually associates decreasing distance between you and the car in front of you with decreasing speed, the absence of decreasing speed may seem like acceleration).

Four possibilities of what happened:
(1) neither brakes nor accelerator engaged
(2) brakes engaged
(3) accelerator engaged
(4) both brakes and accelerator engaged

(1) may be consistent with your story if the heuristic bias plays out.
(2) may be consistent with your story if the many brake redundancies fail (this should be fairly obvious upon investigation as the braking system is mechanical, not electrical).
(3) may be consistent with your story.
(4) may be consistent with your story if the software and hardware redundancies for deactivation of the accelerator pedal (when the brake is activated) all failed. (4) may also occur if ABS was activated, but you didn't note that you felt anything unusual when you applied the brakes (for instance, a pulsing resistance).

(4) is highly unlikely, (2) can be investigated by looking if there was any mechanical failure in the brake system from pedal to brake pads. (1) and (3) would be difficult to prove in the positive or the negative, but only situations (2) and (4) would put liability on the car itself. It might be useful to look at the conditions necessary for airbag deployment:

Given: Your 4R's airbag did not deploy,
If: (A) brake activation is necessary for (B) airbag deployment and (C) the circuit for airbag deployment is independent of the potentially failed mechanical redundancies of the brakes,
Then: failure of airbag deployment suggests, more strongly, either failure of multiple redundancies.

It should be that airbag deployment can happen without the brakes being applied, even if you're going more than 10-15 miles per hour. This is something that's worth looking in to.

I hope I didn't miss any possibilities (only two binary variables: braking and accelerating which are either (a) on, or (b) off) and that this breakdown makes the analysis a little more logical. I know how scary it can be to have your life in jeopardy and really hope you come to a positive resolution to this incident.

Attached is a PDF that might better help diagram what I'm trying to say.

Also, it might be useful for you to post any pictures you might have of the accident and our copies of the police report filed, if any.

When I was looking to install a trailer brake controller, I noticed that the brakes are mechanically engaged, so I'm not sure electronics play a role in the brakes not activating. Electronics may be involved if both the brake and accelerator pedals were activated (in which case electronic failure would result in the accelerator input being accepted an the engine being activated). ABS could also be a culprit if activated inappropriately.

+1 RE: photos and/or police report. It'd also be helpful to know geographic location and driving conditions (e.g., dry pavement, wet pavement, etc.). It appears you gave a recommendation to have someone go to a Toyota dealership in Long Beach, CA a while back and the weather on July 14, 2010 for Long Beach, CA was 64/91 (Fahrenheit), no precipitation. Please confirm where the accident took place.

Sounds like you hit the wrong pedal.* I've done it in my T4R. I noticed that the pedals are very close to the same plane versus my other cars where the accelerator sits on a plane several inches back.

Anyway, let us know what Toyota finds.

* I say this because only 2 things make the car speed up: gravity and gas.

Just what the F*)K are you implying with that remark, Larry?

Wow. I figured someone may be a girl about this. My parents are immigrants too and I can see why his writing style may come off that way. I guessed he was Filipino because I searched and found his name. Maybe you should do some research before you mouth off.

Trollin. Ban the SOB. I've had enough. The Toyota sudden acceleration stuff has been proven to be crap. Get over it.

What's trollin'?

trolling is a fishing term,

usually you drag a lure behind a slow moving boat in order to attract fish and catch them.

on the internetz trolling means.

"Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. When done in a moderated internet community, this can result in banning." -- UD.com
