Brand New Serpentine Belt Marks/Grooves

Hello,

I changed my serpentine belt last weekend and I noticed that the new belt has markings/grooves on the backing already. It looks like an old belt after a week of use? Is this normal?

Don't have an answer for you other than my newer belt looks like this and has since shortly after install. Just the outer "finish" wearing off as it wears into the pulleys I assume.

Not sure where you're located, but I would assume somewhere within the rust belt by looking at your second photo, I see a lot of rust and corrosion and also the pully the smooth side of the belt is running on looks to have a good bit of pitting/corrosion, my guess it's the rough pully and or other pullys that has caused the "grooves" on the belt.

Because I can't see the belt surface of the pulley/s the above is only speculation on my part, but if the pully/s are indeed rough you need to either replace it/them or smooth it/them out with some fine emery cloth.

The surface of the pulleys are completely smooth and not pitted. The outer edges where the belt doesn't make contact is the only place.

No symtoms, it's perfect.

I used a Gates belt.

Hmm. That's odd. I would've thought rough pulley surfaces per the other post. Or maybe it's too tight, but that would be squealing on you. Keep a close eye on it if it concerns you. Carry the other belt and spare tools just in case it leaves you stranded.

I just ordered the Bando belt for mine cause I'm not sure when the last owner did it.
