Break In and Air FIlter

I recommend using a good synthetic oil and oil filter (Amsoil or Mobil 1, 0w-30), with a cotton air filter (TRD, K&N, etc.). At 5K miles have the oil analyzed to see how well the oil is holding up and to see how much longer you can run it before changing. After you have verified the change interval you should get 10K+ miles, safely, out of a change.

KOZ, I'm using Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil, usually 10W40. You said that 0W30 better. Why? As far as I know first number is viscously at low temperature and last viscously at high temperature. So 0W30 is more winter oil.

Just curious, I know that Toyota recommends 5w30 for the V8. I did not realize that they recommended 10w40 for the V6.

I have not made my judgement on the K&N filter. After my UOA comes back, I will post up results. IF it lets in more dirt into my engine, I wiont use it. I have not noticed a difference with the K&N installed. However, I might put in the OEM filter to see if I notice a difference going back to stock... who knows...

If I end up switching back, I will sell you the K&N !

Wow such a great discussion who knew??

Ok KOZ I am going to wait for your Results, when will you get them back I am VERY interested to see what it says.

I purchased my K&N from Performance products and would need to return it back to them. I wonder if they will make me pay the shipping for a return??

How about an Intake Kit guys??

Actually it recommends 5W30, but it looks like all-season oil, so I'm using 10W40 for Summer and 0W30 for Winter.

I guess you get big temp swings in Canada :). I bet that 0w30 comes in real handy at 50 below.

There are many reasons why NOT to use 10w-40. Read this information, it will explain how important viscosity is and how lower viscosity oil is more effective. A MUST READ!

Thanks for the link.
I thought that higher viscosity is better. Following your link:

The lower viscosity will provide the same protection as higher viscosity in warmer locations but flow much faster and quicker, especially on start-up. Also being that there is more/faster flow, the lower viscosity oil will cool the vital areas of the engine better. Also it will produce more power and better efficiency.

Ok, so lower viscosity is better. Did I misunderstand it before?

The 10W40 is 40% thicker at operating temp. Thicker = less flow = less lubrication and cooling.

The 0W30 and 5W30 are the least thick when cold, flow and lubricate better at start up. 10W40 is 70% thicker at 40C.

OMG I was hyperventalating reading this thread!!!!

Koz and Bluto are correct, DO NOT use 10W40 ever!!!

5w30 or 0W30 for the best protection, esp at start up!

Hey BOAZ, get your UOA test results back to see if there has been a a difference??? THe verdict is still pending from installing the K&N

No not yet, I have about 4300 miles on the oil with the filter. I plan on changing taking a sample around 5000-5200 miles.

About the 1st week of august I will be at that mileage. I am moving at the end of the month and I am sure I will be racking up the miles!!

I am thinking about poping the OEM filter in and driving it for a few days to see if I notice a difference in throttle respone/ sound/ MPG etc. I dont want to mess with the experiment.

I might test the amsoil filter next... dunno
