Break In Oil?

Hey guys. So, I'm getting towards the end of the rebuild of my 96 SR5. For those who haven't seen it, the engine had a blown HG when I bought it. I sent the engine off to be rebuilt and I'm just waiting for the injectors to get back from cleaning.

My question is: Is there anyone out there with experience with break in oil? Is it necessary or is cheap-o dino oil sufficient? The engine builder recommended adding some zinc additive for the first start-up. I looked at "zinc additives" at Advance Auto and the manufacturer recommends not adding it to late model engines due to possible catalytic converter damage. What's the deal T4R? Thanks!

A thousand people will have 999 opinions on this.

Mine is run cheap stuff and change it and the filter at 500 miles.

Load the motor up (not rev it - load it up in gear) to help seat the valves and rings.

Of course my 2015 TE came with full syn and they say don't change it until 10K miles. I am going to short shift that a bit and do the first oil change at 7500.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah....I understand it's probably like opening a can of worms with everyone's opinion. I think I have a little more research to do.

Break in oil is generally for overhead valve engines with flat tappet cams. The 3.4 is an overhead cam engine.
