Breather Question

So I was thinking about doing the breather mod when a thought ran across my mind. With the breather in the original location a certain temperature must be reached in order for the breather to "blow off" gases. By extending the breather by in some cases 5-6 ft the gases must in turn reach a higher temperature to cause this "blow off" effect to occur.

This in turn means that the temperature of the rear case actually rises beyond the normal operating temperature. I'm not sure exactly how much of a rise in temperature we are talking here but what if this rise in temperature is significant and Toyota knowing this decided not to extend the breather themselves??

Any thoughts?

Just leave it alone. It's fine where it is.

The only good location for an extension is next to the gas cap. Anywhere else is going to put more water/mud on it than the stock location.

It's only going to be a problem if it jams open with debris (highly unlikely) or if you do a ton of water crossings (in which case you should be doing more frequent maintence anyway).

the very first time i took mine off-road, mud got jammed in there and jammed it open, so tons of muddy sewer water got in there.

anyway, probably won't happen to you, but if you're worried, you can always do the mod if it'll make you feel better about things off-road.

i'll probably extend mine soon. when it isn't so hot outside that i'll cook on the pavement!

The diff breather has very little to do with the temp of the diff. It was made to have a release for pressure build up in the diff while driving, by extending it it still works the same. The reason you want to release pressure in your diff is to save your seals, so you dont end up with oil finding a way out.

If you take your diff breather off you will notice that is seals OK, but not good enough to withstand water and cooling down for a period of time. It will be OK for short water crossing, but if you do extended drives through water (or sloppy mud) you can get lots of moisture in.

Since syn diff oil is pretty expensive and the rear diff takes 3qt I did feel like experimenting, the mod only cost $20 at most.

There is a reason why a lot of off roaders do it. If you dont do a lot of water (mud) crossing, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you it happens to you then, better check you rear diff. I'm talking water more than 20" deep, not just a heavy rain on the street type water.
