Brights not coming on

I must be missing something here. When I push the light control stalk forward to turn the bright lights on the brights don't come on, but when I pull it back the brights do come on. I tried it with the fogs on and off and the lights in the manual and auto settings. What am I doing wrong? I've used the brights for the year that I've owned my truck and this is the first time they haven't come on by pushing the stalk forward.

Is it possible the light control stalk or one of the relays is malfunctioning?

Thanks!

I doubt it is the relay otherwise the hi's would not work at all. It is either a broken wire or more likely a bad contact in the stalk when switched to the forward position.

I took my truck to my dealer (Marietta Toyota) today to check out the various issues I've been experiencing with it.

In reference to my bright lights not staying on, it turns out the light control switch is bad and they have to order it. Cool.

I've been experiencing lots of pops and clicks from my driver's seat. It turns out the "switch" is bad and the seat doesn't lock in place. They are also ordering it. OK cool.

Another concern I had was with the pops and clicks I've been hearing from the center console. When the truck turns corners and anytime the truck flexes the center console made plastic clicking and popping noises like pieces were rubbing. This has been driving me frigging nuts... It turns out the center console is "bad". Not sure what that means (probably broken parts that aren't connecting correctly to secure the console in place), but they are ordering a new center console - front and rear halves. Very cool.

My truck was delivered to the dealer the first week of September 2005, so it was probably one of the first 2006 4Runners. Maybe that explains some of the issues I'm having with the interior. My truck drives and runs flawlessly. Just got back from a 1200 mile trip up to Ohio. Averaged 21 mpg driving 75 and 80.

It's nice to know that I'm not nuts with all the noises I've been hearing in my truck. Kudos to Marietta Toyota.

Update... Well my dealer replaced the broken light switch and the brights work correctly, but the noisy center console and driver's seat issues aren't resolved yet.

First visit:

They identified the issues and ordered parts.

Second visit:

They replaced the light switch and the bright lights work correctly now.

They replaced the front and back halves of the center console, but not the top pieces or the complete unit. They replaced the two bottom plastic halves, not to black rough finished parts. When I picked up the truck after the second visit they had installed the older granite trim pieces instead of the black-wood trim pieces for my 2006. Geez.... don't these folks have any pride in their work? I showed the error to the service adviser and he shook his head, apologized then sent it back to the body dept. They had to order the parts again... The center console was so noisy with creaks and cracks and such that I didn't drive my truck until they had the correct parts in stock.

In this same visit they performed the seat rattle/noise tsb and it only succeeded in making the seat noisier. They re-torqued the seat bolts and the seat squeaks when I move laterally. Now it makes noise when I move forward in the seat. This seems to only happen when I've been in the seat for at least 10 or 15 minutes.

Third visit:

They successfully installed the correct trim pieces in the console and thankfully it is less noisy than it was when I bought it in the first time. There are however creaks and pops still present. some are from the drivers seat and others from the console.

They re-torqued all screws and bolts, etc... in both front seats (only the driver was originally making noise...). Now the seat makes more noise and had grease on it from the repair folks not being careful...

So, do I press the dealer to replace the driver's side seat? This is my current line of thinking. I'm also pretty sure the offending part in the console is one that haven't replaced.

To be fair, the dealer has been very accommodating so far. They are pleasant and apologize for the issues and have given me a loaner, etc... It just seems either parts aren't high quality and their labor isn't trained properly.

Are any of you folks experiencing the same thing with the interior of your trucks? I love my 4Runner, but the lack of interior quality parts makes me wonder if the truck will last as long as I want it to last, which is at least 10 years.

Unfortunately, Toyota too has taken some shortcuts to cut costs and while their quality is still better than other manufactures the interior quality and durability of today's Toyota does not compare to what Toyota was producing in the 80's and early 90's.

I got my car back Wednesday afternoon after my local dealer (Marietta Toyota) replaced the driver's seat frame. After about 100 miles of driving all the rattles and clicks and pops and squeals and seat movement are gone. so far so good.

My advice to you all is if you have any work done on the interior on your car or truck check the work carefully before you leave the dealer. Even though they replaced the seat frame and did a good job of putting the leather back on, they broke several plastic seat rail guards and did not put on the rear rail plastic covers.

be careful out there...
