Still daily-driving the winter 5-speed. I was cruising along and thought, *man, that engine whine is getting way worse.* After about a two-hour drive, I figured I’d better investigate.
Pulled all the auxiliary belts off and—quiet as a church mouse. Huge relief knowing it wasn’t the timing belt or anything major. That pointed to a bearing issue somewhere in the accessory drive.
Started checking everything over and found the culprit: the power steering pump had a ton of play, especially in the front shaft bearing. Dug into the parts inventory and, luckily, had two pumps in stock.
Swapped it out, put everything back together, and took it for a rip—problem solved. Now I just need to snug the belts up a bit since they’re not quite tight enough. Nothing like a random belt squeal paired with watching your voltage drop. The power steering belt needs a little more tension too.
That’s tomorrow morning’s job.
