broke my tranny? 95 4run v6 2wd

So I just got the vehicle and drove it cross country 1000 miles. When I got it home I intended to do an oil change and instead drainted the auto tranny fluid while filling up the oil. I drove it down the road for a minute before It started acting funny. High rpms were giving me low speeds. Eventually it wouldn't even go forward, but reverse worked. So I got it home. Realized my mistake. Redid the oil (correctly) and put 5 quarts of atf in it. Now however, all the forward gears don't go faster when I give it gas. Drive causes ot to creep up slowly(much slower than before) but giving it gas acts like I'm in neutral. Reverse works fine however, with no problems. Any ideas? I'm prepared for a whole new tranny but I've heard of solenoids and things that could be cheaper. Thanks

No expert here, but you might need to let it sit a bit and let the fluid get in.

So you drained the trans fluid, and over filled the oil, then drove it? Didn't you notice that what you drained wasn't oil, or that you couldn't have possibly fit nearly 5 quarts of oil in the engine? Didn't you check the dipstick? I can't believe you didn't catch that mistake.

If you drove w/o fluid in the trans, it's probably toast, as it seems you've found.

I did the exact same thing a few months ago, minus the driving part. The ATF drain plug is aligned the same as the oil plug, just that it's a bit farther back (and attached to the tranny drip pan!). I didn't notice the color b/c I was in my girlfriend's poorly lit garage. And somehow the oil wasn't low but adding 5 quarts didn't seem to overfill it. Redrained all oil and added 5 new quarts. Also refilled the ATF. No problems. Not sure about your situation. I do know that when you add ATF they say to shift into EVERY gear on down the line, and then on back up.
