Broken 4wd Push Button

Hello. Love this forum. Been lurking for almost two years, never really needed to ask any questions before, up until now..

I have a completely stock 2000 Limited. While installing a double din head unit, I mistakenly attempted to unscrew the 4wd shifter, as that was the process to remove the console on my prior 2002 Tacoma. (totaled two years ago when someone hit me, still miss that thing.) There are 2 wires that connect to that button that I ripped out. Im looking at it now and it seems pretty imposible to get those wires up into the area and reconnect them. Am I stuck with buying a whole new piece or are there any ways of re-attaching these wires? They are ripped about 3 inches from where the plastic connecter is.

Radio went in no problems. The dash and wiring is the same basic layout as the Tacoma.

I'm afraid your right about the junkyard. The shifter knob appears to be sewed on to the black leather boot, which looks to be detachable from the rest of the plastic, wood trimmed center piece. Hopefully I can find just the knob/leather as Im sure the rest of that plastic will be expensive and may not fully match the rest of the wood trim.

I think I may have one of the lowest mileage 4runners on here. Bought it from a old guy (in his 80s) back in Oct 2009 with 35k miles, up to 62k now. He babied that thing.

I attached a shot of how mine looks. Everything below the leather piece isnt on mine. Just the 2 wires that come out and connect to the plastic connector that's wrapped in some foam.

I realize I'm raising this thread from the dead, but it was the closest thing I could find that could possibly help me. I have a Multi-Mode transfer case and I want to know how to properly remove the handle so that I DON'T break it and end up in this situation. I was able to work around it and get a new radio and CB installed this weekend, but I will have to open up the dash again soon and it would be nice to have full access. Most of the videos I've seen just show them twisting the knob off the shifter, but the Multi-Mode has a push button which would obviously have some sort of electronics/wiring and I'd rather not accidentally break my 4wd just to access my dash.

I have a '99 Limited so it's this style.

The easiest way is to leave the knob. The leather will pop off the plastic trim at the base....just push out and down on one side.
