Broken Dipstick.

Anyone know what this dipstick is for? I thought trans fluid but read on here something about my 4runner maybe not having a trans fluid dipstick? It is located on the passenger side. It's broken too. Does not seem to be stuck in there, the stick looks to have been sheared off with wire snips or something. Anyone know what part number I need to replace this? Thanks for help....

IIRC 2004 and up 4Runners don't have the dipstick. It's the ones that use the WS transmission fluid.

That one should be the transmission. See if you can follow the dipstick tube from underneath and if it goes into the transmission.

Yellow dipstick is oil, orange is transmission fluid.
2003 V8's and 2003-2004 V6's still have the trans dipstick.

The dipstick with the orange top is for the transmission fluid level check. If the metal 'dipstick' is missing from the plastic head, then you will need to order another one. I'm not sure why the original one would have broken, unless someone forced it back into the filler tube and broke the dipstick off. If this is the case, the broken part might still be inside the filler tube, and will have to be removed before you will be able to install a new one. I know on mine, that the dipstick does about a 90 degree twist as it is inserted into the filler tube because of the several bends the filler tube makes. You also might want to check underneath to be sure the bottom of the filler tube is attached to the trans. If you aren't the original owner, it is possible that the transmission was replaced, and someone installed a newer model, which doesn't use the dipstick, and the installer just left the filler tube in place instead of removing it, and cut the dipstick off of the head so it wouldn't be sticking out of the bottom of the filler tube.

I'm pretty sure the A340F always had a dipstick...... you must be thinking of the A750F, that came behind the 1GR engine.

When I read his initial question, I made the assumption, abet a wrong one, that he had a 4th gen. After reviewing his post, I noted his sig line, which indicates he has a '98. So, most likely, the dipstick just broke off the handle from use, or abuse.
