Broken Key

All,

The rubber fob that attaches to the key ring broke off. Apparently its coded. Key works fine, just have no way to secure it. Locale locksmith wants $80+ for new key and dealer is $100+ what are my options, anyone else had this issue?

Seems to be the achillies heel of the key.

Find a spot on the key that you cam drill through and zip tie it maybe? Sounds ghetto but it would work.

You might be able to find a blank key on eBay and have the stealership program it. Good luck.

I looked for weeks trying to find a cheaper route than having the dealer program the key. Came up with nothing. Had to bite the bullet and pay the dealr $90 for about 20 mins worth of work. Still chaps my arse to this day.

ya, u can get a startech blank on eBay cheaper than the stelaership, but unless u know sum body, bend over, u will still need it programmed

Sorry for not seeing this post sooner. Here is a site I have used many times. I had to replace a remote on both my 3rd gen and 4th gen 4runner, as well as my mom's Avalon. I just bought the fob's off ebay and programmed them myself.

Well, I think he's looking for the key programming, not the keyless entry, which is really easy to do. AFAIK there are very few ways to do your own key programing at home, sadly.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted, but decided to leave it because I figured it might be helpful for someone...
