Broken Lug Nut Shaft

Hello, everyone. I went to have my tires rotated this weekend and in the process of taking off the lug nuts, apparently the shop broke one of the shafts. So, I only have 5 lug nuts holding my front passenger side tire on instead of 6. The shop will pay for the repair at a shop they use, but I'm a bit concerned as to how that is fixed. Is it a simple fix? I think I may take it to Toyota and have them tell me how they would fix it. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Generally you just hammer out the broken lug with a 3lb. sledge. Then you can use an impact gun a washer with a little lube on it and a nut to draw the new stud into place. Pretty easy fix.

I'm not sure what you mean by shaft...but I'm going to assume you are saying wheel stud since you said your wheels are only held on by 5 lugs.

1) First off...don't let anyone touch your vehicle ever again. I don't trust anyone touching mine. Do your own rotation.

Easy fix... easier than changing the oil.

I think the dealer will charge at least a $100 for the job. But if the shop is willing to pay for it, save yourself the trouble of getting dirty. Broken studs are not uncommon on the 4th gen 4Runner or Tacomas.

Study the procedure. That way when you take it to their shop hopefully you can watch them so if they try to pull anything shady you can stop them and get the problem fixed the right way.
