broken stud replacement

NTB just broke a stud on my right rear while rotating tires. They said that they have to pull the rear axle to replace the stud. Is that right? They have broken four other studs over the last three years but never said they needed to pull the axle (not sure if those 4 were front or rear). I suspect they (or someone) overtorqued the studs and now they are breaking one by one.

Does the rear axle have to be pulled to replace the stud? Is it common to have broken studs on a 4Runner?

No it is not common, and if they have already broken 4 before this, why do you keep going there?

Short answer: I'm a dumbass.

Long answer: Free tire rotation and balance, and they replaced the broken studs. I had stopped going there and then the Toyota dealer broke a stud so I think the damage is already done. I won't buy my next set of tires there.

This is just my opinion, but it sounds like they do not bother with a torque wrench, and just use the air gun to blast them on. I would say that all of them are subject to breaking at this point. I would want them all changed out, and redone with a torque wrench, just my .02, good luck to you.

Define "common". It most certainly IS NOT uncommon, as it has been a somewhat frequent topic here. (It happened to my 2010).

+1. One of the things I like about Discount Tire is they install with a Tq wrench.

I really think it depends on whether people think it’s common or uncommon. For me, uncommon. But then again mine are torqued with a torque wrench versus an impact gun.

I would say overall it’s an uncommon thing and the only thing making it common is the person or shop doing the work incorrectly.

I think you rotate to a clear spot and punch the bad one through, then pull a new one in with a nut and some washers.

"Been there done that" ~ You do NOT have to pull the axle.

I would be replacing all of your studs IMHO based on your posts though. And I'll let others nit-pick the semantics of the common/uncommon issue. But on both FJ40s, the FJ62 and the first gen T4R I've had, Toyota has always used a low torque softer metal for the studs. I do not know the reason for this, but they have one I'm sure (sort of).

they just need to pull the hub and its fairly straight forward, but yeah, lesson learned don't go to places that use a impact/torque gun on your lugs.

Its fairly uncommon when using the right tools...lol.

Thank you all for the input. I have a bearing going out so I am going to get at least the front studs replaced when I have the bearings done.

I broke one of mine when changing my rotors. Was very easy to replace. Beware that the front and rears are different.

The last shop I went to busted 3 studs on one tire. Never will do business with them again...
