Broken Tie Rod

Took my runner in to the tire shop today to have new rubber put on and an alignment. While standing in the waiting room watching the tech attempt to make adjustment for the alignment i see my tie rod hanging down. After i watch three other techs come look at the broken tie rod i get a call from the manager that my tie rod needs replaced. They told me it was worn and i was lucky it broke there instead of on the side of the road. I talked to another manager and he agreed to replace it. They didnt feel responsible because its a 97 with 170,000 miles. I see their side but they did break it while working on it....was i in the wrong here?

Hate to say it but I think it's on you. Old truck, high miles. It would've broken no matter who had the wrench in their hand. If one broke, be certain the other side isn't far behind. You should probably do the LBJ's too.

Question is what part of it broke? Guessing the joint popped apart?... I could see too much force trying to break the lock nut loose causing them to pop the joint. It probably was more than past its prime, but i'm sure it didn't just fall apart on the alignment rack either.

Yes it came apart at the joint. Thats exactly what happend, the tech was trying to loosen the lock nut when it came apart. I do service and repair on hvac systems and anytime i feel like something could break during a service or repair i warn the customer before proceeding. I felt bad asking for the replacement but also felt they had some part in it. They had to replace both inner and outer rods.
