went to the shop to get alignment rechecked for a funky pull upon acceleration.
don't know if related or causing the problem, but the tech found the trans mount to be broken completely. he told me that the truck would steer like that due to the broken mount. it's possible. anyway, i ordered one and will replace it tomorrow and drive it to see how it handles. it lasted 16 years and 260k+ miles.
