I have a Texas HunterTruck brush guard that has been installed on my truck for about a year. I have noticed that when driving and going over bumps in the road the brush guard moves from side to side in a lateral movement. when vehicle is stopped and I try to move it I can not move it in any direction!!! I know i can not provide enough force to simulate the road experience. and I know its not as strong as a full on bumper. but dose anyone know how I might stop this movement and make it more ridged? for that matter has anyone had this experience with their brush guard? what brand do you have? stainless steel or black powder coated? how much did you pay? how easy was the install?


my brush guard Texas Hunter Truck-Stainless steel-196.60 included shipping- install was a pain in the ass! had to bend brackets at a friends metal shop and buy shims and different size bolts to make it properly fit! it could be possible that they sent the mounting brackets for a 1996-98 instead of 99-2002. the quality of the guard its self is top notch.

i have the westin one and it does the same thing....it's because all that weight is just basically balanced between the two frame mounts....i've been wanting to fab up a pair of brakcets to go from the fog light holes under the grille to some structural mount, but just been lazy
 
ah yes i asked the same thing with my hunter guard. it just shakes like a salt shaka when im crusin but solid as a rock when i try to move it. i think i paid the same as you too.
haha it was a PITA for me too. i just had problems getting the rusty frame bolts off. it was wierd though cause i had like 2 or 3 extra bolts from the guard when i was done?? no clue where they go.
 
GORHINO 3000 series ($500), mine came with brackets to attach to my bumper and guard to prevent the movement, but didnt want to drill holes in my bumper

Hunter Black Powder Coated Brush Guard

I have a Hunter installed on my '97. I had the same problem with the mounting brackets being bent to the wrong angle, so when it was installed it was not even. It sat offset to the driver's side. I fixed this one weekend by taking it off and putting the end of the mounting brackets in a vise and bent them to the correct angle, now it is even. However, I do have the vibration issue. I bought a set of Hella 500 driving lights to mount on the guard, but with all the shaking on the highway I am going to wait to figure out how to make it more stable. I have 2 small brackets that came with the guard and 2 long bolts and 2 short bolts left over. I called Hunter's customer service to see where they should attach since their installation instruction are horrible. They said they should not go with it, but after crawling around under the 4Runner it looks like the long bolts could be run through the sub frame. There is a hole in the top of the subframe where they fit through, but on the bottom side of the sub frame under those holes there is not a hole to be able to run the bolts all the way through, but there are some indentions that look like they could be drilled out to allow the bolts to run the all the way through the subframe. Then the brackets would attach to the guard, but you would have to cut some of the plastic on the front valence, which looks like it should not be a problem. As soon as I can get access to a power drill I am going to try this out and then mount the Hellas. Has anybody else looked at this as an option, or tried that for themselves?
 
do not drill out the holes in your sub frame I will take pic today and show what I did. ya the directions were Horrible!
 
Awesome, I am looking forward to see what you did. I am tired of the shaking and I am ready to get the Hellas installed.
 
ya i had a hard time figuring out where the long bolts went too. its hard to explain so i think the pics he'll take should work nice. mine mounts in 4 places does everyone elses? 2 go through the lower grill which are way tight against the grill, and the other 2 are on the frame. but ya i think in order to even stop the shaking i think there would have to be 2 more mounts from the top of the guard??
 
all brushguards are going to move side to side when you go over bumps, its because the 4runner is a body on frame vehicle, meaning the body will move seperate from the frame, cant be helped, can only be fixed by attaching supporting posts that are strong enough to bend the bumper in line with the way your body is bending. hell, ive got an ARB and it still moves from side to side a little

Like Runnerup was saying, alot of what you are seeing is actually the body moving and not the brushguard. Its a combination of chassis flex, rigidity of the product and body to chassis movement.
 
I had a WAAG guard on my last T4R. It had minimal side to side movement. Just bought a Hunter push bar for my 4th Gen. It needs more support to be worth anything.
 
yes I totally agree with you on everything! but you did forget the people who take their sweet ass time on the cross walks. Oh and chicks dig it, always a plus not as much as big tires but a close second. now if you have both you are in!

I used to push my buddies 5 speed wrangler across parking lots while he was in class. Or I would nudge up to his spare tire and try to push him into intersections. Both were amusing.

i got a package of 4 (only used 2) 4 inch 90 degree L brackets. i had like 4 of the short thick (1/2 inch diameter) bolts l had left over from my grill guard. i spaced each bracket about 2 inches from the side bars of the grill guard. i used a 1/2 bit to drill a hole on each side of the cross bar to mount a bracket, and the same size hole on the bumper in the same place the the bracket already had holes fashioned. i made a mark on the bracket where it hung over the top of the cross bar, put it in a vice and bent it accordingly, then used the 1/2 inch bit to make the holes on the bracket bigger then just bolted them down. it works amazingly well, no shaking at all.
