We have a commercial running here where the main "character" in the ad is supposed to be a Ford employee. In it, she claims that Ford quality now equals Toyota's. I almost throw up everytime I see this ad. <eye roll>

Neither Ford or GM can match Toyota quality IMO. I owned a Toyota pickup in the 80's and only put gas, oil and spark plugs into it. The last three GM SUV's I have owned are quite a different story. With the 4runner I can now finally stow that drip pan that has been living on the garage floor.

Yeah I see that commercial running here too. I don't get pissed I just think it's funny. Toyota's quality had to drop and the American vehicle manufacturers had to take a huge step upwards in quality before any comparison could be made. It promotes Ford's quality but still touts Toyota's

Pretty catchy when they just say it, but it is pure Bovine Scatology in reality. If I buy a car then the first 3 months pretty much better damned well be problem free - regardless of who makes the vehicle.
My 4Runner beats out almost every other SUV out there, especially the Explorer.

The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan-based RDA Group has found that Ford is on par with top-level stalwarts Toyota and Honda when it comes to vehicle quality. Ford managed 1,284 "things-gone-wrong" (TGW) per 1,000 vehicles during the first three months of ownership this year, statistically matching the two top Japanese brands, which are tied at 1,250 TGW. Though it certianly won't be the last word in the ongoing debate as to who makes the best cars, it is at least a good sign for Ford. Perhaps what's most impressive is that 36 of 40 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo and Mazda nameplates improved this year versus 2007. Ford's performance in this study marks an eight-percent improvement over the previous year, at which time they were tied with Toyota, but trailing industry-leader Honda. While Ford is glad to see quality improving, every automaker would surely like to sit alone at the top of the quality rankings, and Ford is no different.
Ford builds some pretty good vehicles these days, but faces a large perceived quality gap, as only 41-percent of consumers consider Ford vehicles according to their own internal data. For that reason, expect Ford to tout these new quality findings as part of their Drive One campaign."

Apparently, in April 2007, Ford tied with Toyota in the above survey with Honda being #1 (see this link: http://news.windingroad.com/car-buying/new-survey-says-ford-quality-equal-to-that-of-toyota/).
This year (April 2008), all three are tied "statistically," even though the raw numbers showed Toyota and Honda are slightly ahead.

The conclusion was reached based on the results of the first quarter 2008 U.S. Global Quality Research System study conducted by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The company conducted the study for Ford, surveying owners of vehicles from all manufacturers about their overall satisfaction with their three-month old vehicles. The study covered vehicles registered between September and November 2007.
According to the study's findings, Ford's domestic brands averaged 1284 "things gone wrong" per 1000 vehicles during the first three months of ownership, compared to 1250 for Toyota and Honda. Ford says that the figures are statistically equal, as the two figures are within three percent of each other.
The best performers for Ford were the Taurus and Mercury Sable, which recorded less than one problem per vehicle, along with the Volvo S80 at 947 things gone wrong. The Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ weren't far behind at 1030 and 1065 things gone wrong, respectively.
Additionally, Ford claims best-in-class honors for interiors and electronics and tied for best-in-class for paint and vehicle engineering."
