BudBuilt Winch Plate

Well after practically 6 months of dreaming of an internal style winch plate bumper for my truck, I finally have one.I knew there was plenty of room behind the front bumper cover for a winch and only makes sense to come out in the center of the lower grill. Tried to get Justin at Rocktek here locally,since he's another steel guru, to make one but he's been nowhere to be found and no returned calls. Lucrum Ind. was practically begged to build one for the 5ths for almost a year and until very recently didn't have the time.Bud's first prototype was already fabbed and on a truck by then.

Bud at Budbuilt has a design for one as he has a had a 5th Gen in his shop for a while now designing stuff for the 5ths. Think F and R bumpers,rear tire carriers,second battery trays and the list goes on. My only real input was to the location of where the fairlead comes out of the lower grill. After all he's the mechanical engineer and working steel is what he does!

I'm doing the install with this first one and my winch on my truck this weekend .These are going into production and will be for sale very shortly and they will fit all models 5ths.The price is tentatively set at ~$375-400 and will come powdercoated.

It ties into the front of the frame on each side with existing bolts and will also bolt to the front aluminum bumper. The lower grill itself (not shown in the pics) will have to be cut out of course to fit the fairlead.I have a roller fairlead on mine because I'm attaching my front license plate to it ,for a stealth look,but he will have a version set up for a Hawse style fairlead like the Master Pull fairlead in one of the pics below. I have polyurethane rollers on my fairlead for a synthetic rope.

I'm totally stoked!

Several questions......

Will it be able to handle the full weight of the truck?

Will it work with BB skid plates down the road?

Will it be any problem with the front impact sensors setting anything off?

Yea it is gadgets truck. Bud is working on a lot of stuff and will have a ton of info for us in the very near future. So try not to send Bud 100 emails cause that will only slow progress down. Once the stuff is done we will have all the info on everything.
 
Looks great Harper! I'm looking forward to seeing what Bud puts out!

The only problem I see with this is the same one that I have now with mine. When you use the winch and have to role it back up all nice and neatly. It's almost impossible to see inside to control where your line is going without sticking your head in there…which is not safe!
 
I gave about all the info I know for now. I think it might be Gadgets truck;-)
His will be the one all others measure up to .........as a supercharged beast of a 5th TE is inevitable!

About 50/50 on who favors which ones on the Jeep forums where I researched awhile ago.Rollers weigh more.Goggle " roller vs hawse"

For my set-up, since I have to have a front license plate in Texas and I wanted the roller as they make attachments for the plate.Didn't like it on the front bumper.

I would love something like this.....

Combination of the Winter Motorsports (wintermotorsports.com) light bar and the BudBuilt winch mount. I think that would make a super stealth alternative to a full steel bumper replacement.

I'd buy one, and I don't even need a winch.

I agree, it would be nice if a version of the budbuilt winch plate would have 2 recovery points sticking out of the side of the grill to install shackles.

I was thinking of that too but it's going to be a separate mod.Too complicated to do it with the winch plate now. I want to have steel recovery points coming off the main frame coming thru the front bumper plastic that we can hang shackles off of for recovery points.It is going to take some intricate custom work for the holes to be cut out in the bumper plastic. That ABS plastic is some tough stuff and pretty hard to line up exactly where you want to cut out.
Like MrGrimm's Taco recovery points here but just have them coming out holes cut in our bumpers going back to the frame... and then attach shackles.

Definitely talking weeks,like a couple. I installed the first one over the weekend .Worked out a couple of minor bugs but it will be good to go shortly.
I didn't get started til late yesterday and didn't have time to finish. Waiting on my synthetic rope,as I still have a steel one and a couple of bolts missing too. I'll also have to redo my PIAA fogs intall as the plate covered up the bracket holes.I'll just attach them to the winch plate front lip now.

There is less then a 1/2 inch clearance between the plate and the bumper.Wanted to leave enough room for the rope to come out the bottom.

That looks a whole lot better engineered than the one where fellow cut his bumper up because he couldn't wait anymore. (I never saw a followup posting to that endeavor???)

We've never seen a follow-up posting to any of the mounts that tried this location. Zero reports on performance, especially off-angle pulling or the like, which makes me wonder if they didn't accidentally rip off their front end.

Harper7's got a consistent rep for reporting back, so I look forward to his report.
