What do you want it to do?
Everybody is going to tell you to get the maintenance up to date first. If you don't know the trucks history, just do everything on the scheduled maintenance list, fix any issues it has, etc. What comes next depends on what you want from the truck - for most people, a stock truck is more than enough. For basic wheeling, a good set of 31 inch all terrain tires and some armor will eat up a good chunk of your $2000, and will get you on and off 99.9% of the dirt roads and trails in your area.

If you wanna LOOK cool and save money, a spacer lift is good, however it can't do as much nor will it hold up as well offroad. Another good thing to do is look for a cheap roof rack, like on craigslist, and that will give it a rugged look. Extra lights will look good. Also, if you have running boards, drop 'em. You'll be amazed. Have fun!

You can do a lot to these trucks with $2000, assuming you are doing the work yourself, or have good deals with someone who will.
If I was throwing $2000 at my 4runner, I'd buy armor, new rear springs & shocks, bj spacers, good 33's, and a rear locker.
Someone here has a 4runner soft-top operation going. The bikini top is ~$300, and looks very well made, and most importantly, cool!

Hi every body sorry its been so long yall Army dutys call but well been back in va for like 2 days and the baby beast clunks and starts knocking and wouldn't ya know it pull the dip stick bone dry get her towed to the house not sure what seal it would be so im replacing all of them to be safe and from the looks of it the other 2 owners before didnt do any good there is kitchen cocking sealing the oil pan can't wait to see the rest of the crappy work done in there
