I drove through the mountains on my way back to San Diego last weekend. When I got home and looked at the front of my 4Runner it looked like someone had dumped a bucket of dead bugs on it. I'm gonna wash the truck tomorrow and I want to know what is the best way to remove all of those bugs.

Soak it pretty well with water, then I use lots of soapy water (OK, "soapy" is a bad term, but auto wash), preferably with a mitt or somethin gentle on the finish. Take your time. If you have some really tough ones, you can use the "bug scrubbers" (sponge with a soft nylon mesh around it) for the really tough ones.molocono said:

another thing, do not let the bug guts sit in the sun. it will cook the smell into the front end and the smell is sorta like hitting a skunk. i have a friend at work who never cleans her front end on her elantra and it just reeks of rotting bug guts when i walk by it.
as a temp solution, goto a self serve car wash and power spray the front end till you can properly clean the front.
ps: dont forget to clean out around the radiator/ac unit also.

I used to have a can of stuff called "bug and tar remover". Had lots of warning labels all over saying you'd better rinse it off right away, but worked pretty well for stuck guts. Now I take a couple minutes to get a coat of wax on the front end before heading out into the wilderness. Suckers rinse off with hose and sponge pretty easily afterwards.

For removing thick bug guts I soak a couple old bath towels and let them sit several minutes draped over the bugs. The guts are rehydrated then and easy to wipe off. First the hood and bumper, then the side mirriors. No chemicals, no abrasives. Then, if there are any still there a bit of car polish does the trick.

I use a pressure washer with very hot water it works great, but removes the wax as well. No need for elbow grease. I hate bugs!!
