Bug shield/deflector?

Auto Vent Shade makes one exactly the same as stock.
I replaced mine last year.

I replaced mine (oem) from toyota parts zone for about $100 last august.

Original part Pt427-89970 is replaced by pt427-89011. Slightly different but same thing. Just FYI they had to call me and tack on addl shipping charge fr what I paid originally. Still reasonable though for under $100 shipped for oem.
 
I purchased a new deflecor for mine, but did not like the flipped up part, so I ran it through my small table saw and took off about 1.5" and now I have a really nice hood protector.
 
Do these things really work? I've never owned a vehicle with one, so I'm genuinely curious as to what these things do.

Is it just to keep bugs off the glass or is it about looks or something? These things have always struck me as kinda goofy...but I'll be honest, if it really helps keep all the bug guts off the glass—I might buy one.

They deflect bugs, sand and small rocks from hitting your windshield. Over time a windshield becomes pitted from impact of these things.

They protect the paint on your hood too from rock chips. I like them. Mine didn't have one on it when I got it and the original hood had a lot of chips on it until I replaced it with a sport hood. My dad's had one on his Tacoma since almost new and it doesn't have a single chip at 70k miles.

That's a Bugflector II also, same exact one I have. The Bugflector doesn't extend over the edges of the fenders like the II does.

I disagree. My windshield has tons of cracks and chips. Maybe it deflects bugs (a recent drive along the Sac river at night provided evidence to the contrary though) but they will still hit the windshield.

This is what it is for. Normally for off-road vehicles and others, the front end of the hood will get peppered with small paint chips that eventuall start to rust and oxidize. My 91 Pickup had tons without one. My 98 doesn't have a single mark on the hood at 193k miles. However, it does bounce them off the deflector and onto the higher parts of your windshield. Mine does have 3-4 fairly large chips that I had to repair from getting worse. I'm hoping the bug deflector helps deflect or at least slow down incoming objects. Comparing it to my Pickup it seems like it does help, but it's not like some magic force field that is going to keep your 4Runner safe.

What's odd is that even though my Pickup had 100k more miles, it does not have a single crack on the windshield. It's got tons of pock marks all over but rocks don't split the class. On the contrary, my 4Runner has less miles and less pock marks but 3-4 major dents that I repaired to keep from cracking along the entire windshield. Maybe Toyota put on the deflector to compensate for the sub-par windshields?

Yes, Bug Deflector 2 & who really gives a shlt about bugs? It keeps your hood protected from rock chips.

It is not a force field, but a deflector.
 
I could care less about the protection for the windshield. I just want the investment in the paint on my hood to last. I can replace glass a lot cheaper than I can get the hood repainted.
 
My truck had one on it when I bought it, and it made the back of the hood flap around at highway speeds like it was trying to come off. Taking that thing off was the best thing I ever did. Maybe the issue I had is specific to a certain brand, but it was certainly the problem.
