So myself and @%1; are having a friendly disagreement.

What do you build first? Armor (skids, bumpers and sliders) or Do you do lift, lock and tires?

Definitely - Lift/Lock/Tires.

One reason to wait for skids is your geometry will be different before and after a lift. Causing one to heat and beat your skids. I do speak from experience.

Also - if you decide to wheel your 4Runner before being armored up it will teach you to pick a better line to avoid beating up your truck.

:sadwave:

I voted for armor first, because if you build capability first then you end up hammering the truck on tough trails with no armor.

But like I said, that's the responsible thing to do. I've got dents and dings all over my '85 now where I should have put armor that say I'm not very responsible. :D

I could not have said it better myself.

armor? whats that? :bash:
armor is last for me. if ever. altho, i do prefer to have solid bumpers as recovery points.

i think the first mod should be a winch. altho it rarely is.

This is the order that I did it over the course of 21 years (all on the same truck) and I don't have any regrets (except that I should have gotten the cage a lot sooner)...

1) Biggest/most aggressive tires you can fit without a lift
2) Rear locker
3) Lower gears (either ring and pinion or transfer case or both)
4) Sliders
5) Lift and bigger tires as needed (once I learned how to drive it and was pushing the limits of stock IFS)
6) Front locker
7) Winch
8) Roll cage

With numbers 1-4 and a little bit of driver ability you can put a Toyota through all but the very hardest trails on the East Coast.

IF you don't do things like lift and tires first and then wheel your truck, how are you going to know what armor you need ???
Armor first is like putting the cart before the horse, as the saying goes.

I figure that ill do lifers and full skid plates. Might as well, nice I do lift and tires ill focus on bumpers.
