"Build" thread issues

Personally I like ALL the build threads. I think they inspire the not so DIY group to try new things. I bolted on a new suspension system for the first time and was damn proud of that accomplishment. In the OP's eyes that is not a build...I am calling BS as this took me weeks of planning, a full day of wrenching, and it was a great accomplishment IMO. I couldn't have done it without the help of build threads and other suspension discussions. If Imwas a master mechanic than meh...the build threads could be a bit silly, but I would venture that the majority of T4R owners are not master mechanics.

For some changing out a lightbulb could be the first "modification" to any vehicle they have ever owned and that is cool! I think build and modification are mostly used synonymously out here.

Let's reinforce the positive behavior (DIY) and leave the negativity behind.

Hey, I'm not afraid. I'll call some build threads "non builds" or "silly" because window tint and floor mats are not builds. Right? Well, here's the problem: You cannot delineate "classes" of mods. Well, you could but who's gonna do it? Not me. So here in this forum build threads are mostly just mod threads, from floor mats to reshaping fenders to accommodate 35's. And that's OK. You see, most humans are proud about their accomplishments and their stuff. When they do something they want to show it off. It's just our nature. Just look at the pictures of completely stock vehicles sitting in driveways! People are proud and that's just fine. I have no build or mod thread. I don't even list which 4Runner I own anymore because it's unimportant. I try to help people out here but sometimes my bedside manner is not conducive to helping some of you because hurt feelings.

If you are 100 lbs overweight and sit on the couch eating cake that's fine. However when you feel bad and go to the doctor, you get mad and defensive when he tells you to lose 100 lbs, get off the couch and quit eating cake. That's the same way it is around here sometimes. The truth hurts feelings.

Maybe I should clarify while I still feel many "build" threads are not builds. I never said that I thought people should not share or make posts on their trucks. I felt a different title would be more appropriate, which of course is my opinion.

I like looking at what other peoples trucks and what they do to them, it has helped me with my own truck.

There are some who only took what I said as being rude, and maybe to some people it was. However this is a forum and a general discussion thread. I brought something up for discussion and some chose to say "If you don't like it, don't read it". I don't find that attitude to be constructive and it doesn't contribute to the discussion at all.
Many pointed out how they enjoy the threads and provided reasons. I appreciate that feedback and it brings value to the discussion. My point was not to take away any of these threads but to have them named appropriately. I would rather see a title "I got new boots/tires!" over "This is my build thread" with a stock truck and only tires.

I have my own definition of a build and I now know I am in the minority. I will try and put more thought in to what I post before sharing an opinion in future.

My favorite of all is "build thread for my wife's 4runner". 3" lift with 33s but need some running boards to make it easier for her to get in.

Personal attack noted since I started my wife's "build" thread yesterday!


Joking, but her/ our 4Runner may just be some simple bolt-ons or some fabrication, it is just to make it fit our needs better.
The things shared here have given me ideas and I may evolve them.

Keep the "build" threads coming!!!

I eventually posted a "build" thread just because after many years of reading and learning on this and other sites it seemed like I had some minor entertainment value to the other like minded 4runner enthusiasts.

Not everyone has a ton of cash and/or time to throw at their car.

Some times I wish I had the balls to just grab the plasma cutter and start cutting. Maybe a straight front axle, some kinda extreme long travel suspension, maybe toss on a supercharger.

Whoa hold on there, this is a DD, these runners are very capable with decent tires and an aware driver.

Just me again but I think its better to be driving a car you bought in 2004.
I have a car I bought in 1987, granted it is on blocks and in a 100 pieces all over the garage...that's another story.

Fun just to read what others do, WAY better than watching CNN or some such filth.

I think the threads are a way for guys to show their pride in their trucks, whether lightly or extremely modded. They are a way to get feedback from other enthusiasts, and a way to disseminate information to other enthusiasts.

I personally don't blindly look at build threads, but if I see an interesting photo or something in a regular thread I will often track down that member's build thread if they have one and look at the details of the truck.

I don't have a build thread but I have a Smugmug gallery of stuff I have done to the truck. This exists mainly so that if someone asks, for example, "where can I mount a CB?", I can grab a pic from my gallery and post it as an example. It also seems like it would be a good record of mods and costs in the event that I have to file an insurance claim, so it's a good personal record as well.
