Ha ha! Monstaliner. Good stuff. Haven't seen that color yet. I think I will be pulling my fenders this summer and adding another layer. Some places were a little thin on my first application.

It's been a minute since I posted here. Have done some stuff with old Red tho
First there was this, bought the LCE header a while back, never got around to installing it...
Then this, because hi-flow...
Then it was freakin loud, and I hated it, I'm quickly becoming an old fart ( I actually like it ) and loud was just not doing it for me, so I tried this...
But you can see how it's not on the truck anymore, because it sucked. Honestly the glasspack helped a ton and made the tone bearable, but the Dynomax turbo was loud and rattly in spite of it. Off it came as fast as this could ship to me...
Mucho better, but still has a little popping when I let off the gas, so I will probably add the glasspack in the same place as before. Also I need to add another hanger probably on the rear crossmember because the new tail pipe contacts the cab, no bueno...

So I carry 2-300 lbs of tools in my car on any given workday, gotta have tools when you're buildin 'Merica everyday! anyways, my OME 890s just weren't happy with this arrangement after I added the rear swing out, so this happened
Then truck sits much better after adding the Superflex's, gained nearly a full inch, and they seem to be handling the extra weight very nicely

Also finally found a sandblasting outfit, had both bumpers blasted, and then painted them myself. I like paint because I can touch it up easily when I ding the finish or want to change things up, both of which are highly likely scenarios. Also found a matchy spare, and located a nice tire to run in the 5th position, looks purdy doesn't it :becky:
Also added a new updated grille. Hopefully soon I'll add some updated headlights to go with it

Its the Quiet-Flow, all the reviews I read sounded like it was the better option to kill decibels, and since I'm going for sneaky not ricey I decided it would work better, plus stainless seems like a good choice for salty winters.

Well, mine is definitely quiet! Mine is almost a year old and will probably have a nice rust hole in the muffler within the next year... what a POS

Hey Red October, thanks for posting all of your modifications. I'm in the planning stages of fabricating my own roof rack because . . . who wants to pay $1200 for a roof rack? Not me! Your roof rack is very inspiring!! I'm going to go low profile with some raised portions for fastening gear down securely.
Your rig looks incredible and I applaud all of your cool mods! Love the color and the name!! I wanted a red one too, but got jumpy and when I found a "low" mileage silver Runner in good shape I snatched it.

My base model seats have been a little torn up since I bought Red, they don't suck, but they aren't great. After searching for a while I finally bit the bullet and found some manual cloth SR5 buckets for a decent deal. Now it feels like angles caressing my buttocks when I take Red anywhere. Yet another excuse to drive my trusty 4Runner.

... Deep in the vast wilderness of southern Idaho (downtown Boise) a Red 4runner skillfully traverses the formidable and intensely rough terrain (freeway exits, parking lots and the dreaded 4 way stop), it conquers everything it encounters with ease. All is well, until as it rounds a bend leading to yet another imposing obstruction (on-ramp), when without warning.... BANG!... then more disturbing sounds.... then sputtering and mis-firing. The Red 4runner pulls to the side of the trail, broken heart barely beating...
Wifey and I went to Boise this week, just seeing the area exploring and visiting some good friends. Red did really great the whole way there, up until we stopped for lunch in downtown Boise. We were getting back on the freeway when she started misfiring and making some pretty bad clattery noises, lost all power and my CEL came on and started flashing. Yep, this is bad, I immediately pulled over and stopped the engine. Luckily we were in a pretty good place to stop, and we have friends in town. So instead of our enjoyable weekend we tried in vain to figure out why Red was broken. Since all of my tools and stuff were back in Salt Lake we didn't get very far. We got some towing quotes
hone:, but that wasn't gonna happen out:. So we rented a Uhaul and a car transport, made it back home last night.
Pretty sad, right? I'm irritated with my engine builder and have been since I dropped it off with them back when this story began, at the moment I'm pretty convinced it is a problem with the rebuild ( I need someone to blame here ). I have had nothing but problems with it, lately it burns a good amount of oil, suffers from piston slap pretty bad and now this. Lucky for me they refused to do anything about it before, and now they will do even less. It may be JDM time, and looking back I shoulda just done that in the first place.
My biggest problem is the wife. While she loves Red she may not be able to trust this truck ever again on a long trip, and that is going to make my life miserable since Red is our adventure mobile as well as my daily driver. Wifey kinda wants me to look for something "newer and more reliable", and while this particular episode (and my vehicular history) points to having to fix my truck continually, I cant think of something i would rather own.
Stay tuned for a diagnosis and possible organ transplant in the near future

Sorry to hear about the mishap and I've been in the shoes before of the other half not wanting to trust something on a trip. Sometimes we have to adjust to accommodate.
I've gone from a 3rd gen to a 5th gen to a 3rd gen again. I loved my 5th gen but medical/money reasons has forced me to change and go back to my 3rd gen which I feel is WAY more versatile and (better now) than my 5th was. To do mods for my 5th was almost 3-5x the cost of mods for other 4runners. Now I am no longer with my ex-wife/gf of over 15 years due to her not wanting to adjust to my new medical conditions and money change from 6k figures to 4 figures....but thats more of a entire different story.
So, I can relate to what your saying, but you can tell her that if you do a new engine swap yourself you have more money for XX here and XX here. Even if you had won the lottery you could still use the same lines as they work for everything. Now if you had unlimited wealth, you would just have more toys (or I would).
But we will miss you if you do leave but be strong and keep us posted!

Im pretty sure that Red and Wifey are gonna have to learn to play nice together, I'm not ready to pay for a "newer more reliable" just yet, plus even if I were to find something else for DD duties, Red would become my toy since I have too much money tied up there to walk away from.
(But lets just keep that between you and me :tape:, eh? I have a rough number in my head that would make the more rational half very angry...:bat: Besides forgiveness is much easier to obtain than permission.)

Tonight's compression and leak-down results solidify Red's need for a new heart
Cyl 1, 46psi
2, 48 psi
3, 175 psi
4, 167 psi
The leak-down test revealed mild leakage into the crankcase from all 4 cylinders, and leakage into the exhaust from both cylinders. These results are pretty consistent with the oil consumption I have been dealing with since the engine finished breaking in, and also confirm my bad valve suspicion for the sudden near death experience that Red has unfortunately been forced to pass thru. :violin: Honestly I am just confirming to myself what I already knew, just didn't want to throw my hands up too early. I am however reasonably upset with myself for having put up with the extended amount of BS surrounding my previous engine rebuilding experience. Now I know that next time, if I want it done right I should probably check the work or do it myself.
