Building Red October

Very cool build, you obviously have talent.

Quick question, might look silly, but I'm not as talented so, how did you wire the LED bolts in your hatch? Just extend the wiring like daisy chain? Do you need any drivers for LEDs?

Thanks.

Thanks man.

Yeah, they are all wired together, and then wired into the rear cargo light switch, so that they function the same as the stock cargo light.

I don't have any great pics of it, maybe I'll take some of how I put the switch together

That it seriously rough man... This has to be one of my favorite builds on here and I'd hate to see it go away. Best of luck getting it fixed.

Maybe it's time for an LS swap...

Whelp, I just bought an engine. Its brand new, never run, all new Toyota parts, 3 year unlimited mile parts warranty. The warranty is good even if I install myself, instead of a shop, and I trust my own hands more than most shops these days so there's that. All for the low low price of 26 Benji's, shipped to my place of employment, a fine forklift possessing establishment in North SLC.

For any of you 4 cylinder fans out there, I upgraded from the 8 port intake to the 3rd generation 3RZ 4 port head and manifold, thats supposed to be good for like 12 hp right off the top, better torque and 10% or so better mpg. Yeah that doesn't sound like much, but when you start measuring dollars per hp gained over stock every little bit helps. ( And the dollars add up faster let me just guaran-damn-tee-ya that! )

So between that and the couple hundred spent at LCE, and the other couple Hundred at RockAuto, I have effectively doubled my investment in this truck, I'm committed. Just wish I woulda done this 18 months ago, and avoided all this song and dance.

All of my parts showed up, and my engine is in a freight depot in SLC, so it'll be delivered this week. There will probably be a few last minute things, there always are.

Well as it turns out my luck just plain blows.

So the outfit who sold me this motor swore, on all that is holy, their mothers and their grandmothers, that this was an engine built with all Japanese parts. I called them multiple times and talked to multiple people, and they all had the same story. I did some pretty extensive research before handing over my money and I couldn't find anything to refute their claims. I should have been more worried by the fact that no one could verify their engine source tho. Plain and simple they lied right to my face.

As it turns out the motor they sold me is also sold by several other "engine builders". They are sourced from a company in mainland China. This company sells several Chinese knockoff versions of quality Japanese engines. Apparently they are even decent quality.

I found out because I became alarmed by the lack of Toyota casting marks on the block, and when I started searching I found the casting mark for the Chinese maker, google and history can finish this story.

Needless to say I'm beyond pissed. I contacted the company I purchased from, no surprises here; they will do nothing. If I want to return the engine I pay return shipping, and they obviously don't refund the first round of shipping. That adds up to about $700 that is gone forever. Even funnier, all of their the warranty claims or other legal claims are handled thru a third party legal outfit, which as it turns out they own (can anyone say "conflict of interest?"), that also offers divorce services, how fitting.

I dunno what I'm gonna do here. My pooper is getting pretty sore from taking all of this right up in there. There is almost nothing I can do about the engine. And my level of anger and frustration is only surpassed at this point by my wife's. I'm actually very surprised she hasn't lit Red on fire and pushed it into the street to watch it die.

This is really sad to hear, there are to many horror stories like this. As long as these vehicles have been around and we still can not find honest engine builders, or even decent swaps.

I guess I will make it run. I've been searching high and low for info on this engine builder, and from what can tell there are a ton of shops that buy and install these knockoff parts, probably without the consumers knowledge, and no one is the wiser. This is marginally good in the sense that "no news is good news." Ergo, most people who run the parts don't know or cannot tell any difference.

I'm really hoping that mine will be similar as far as performance goes. I just have the same worry as before; my wife will never trust this truck again no matter how good I fix it.

The vast majority of negative reviews I have found are because of user error, as is the case with many things.

This in no way exonerates the asshats that lied to me, bastards that they are.

Update;

Its all in, I had some trouble getting it to start up. Got it figured tho, turns out I'm short a couple little parts.

This is how any project goes, you are always short a thing or two. Oh well.

The injector cups that were missing from this motor are on their way to me, I'll have them in my hands Tuesday night. Then probably a half hour to put it all together and fire it up. :thumb:

Wifey really was upset over this whole incident. She was about a gnat's ass from making me start over. She really wants me to get into a 2nd gen Taco or something that she views as more reliable. But after a couple weekends spent working with dealers and test driving beat down truck after beat down truck she realized that was not realistic.

She caved and we decided that I already have so much work in Red that even with the Chinese motor we are money ahead to just run it. So the plan is to get Red up and going again, and keep the old long-block. I'm gonna build it slowly in the back ground and then when the time comes Red will get it back.

This is actually pretty awesome! If you haven't seen what some places like LCEngineering and Paradise Racing are doing with the 3RZ platform then you should check it out! These guys are building 6 second 4 cylinder cars. It makes me wonder what i can get away with. Obviously I'm not gonna go crazy but the idea of a 250-300 hp 4 banger in my daily driver is pretty dang cool. :naughty:

Glad you found a silver lining, but sorry you had to look for it.

Mind sharing the engine builder so others know to not give them any money?

Sucks about your engine. Hopefully it will run good until you can rebuild the old one. I'd really like to buy a Stage 2 from LCE.

Got the last little thing tonight, these little buggers...

Took me about 15 minutes to install.

.... Then Red fired right up! Heck freakin yes! I drove it around for a few miles tonight. Sounds good, feels good. Trying to not get my hopes up too high just yet, but it seems to be working pretty well.

I'm not sure just yet how this is all gonna turn out. I just got the Chinese motor running, and to be honest there are a lot of good experiences out there with parts from the manufacturer of the engine (XG Engine). Not to mention there are a number of different vendors who sell their parts. Right now I'm neutral on the manufacturer (this may change depending on how things roll out from this point).

However, I do feel that the vendor that I dealt with was not as honest as they should have been in disclosing the origin of their merchandise. Lying about the origin is bad business. APR Auto, toyotatruckengine.com, or Engine Monster are all the same entity based out of Colorado Springs, CO. These are the people who grossly misrepresented the engine I bought.

In hind sight I should have done more leg work before my purchase; fool me once. But I do guarantee that there won't be an opportunity to fool me twice. Even if my engine turns out to be a great success, I would buy the same parts from a more transparent vendor if there were to be a next time.
