ctran013 The renogy 100w panel charges very well. I guess ill say that in normal sun it can produce 6amps at 12v. which for me has kept my second battery full this entire trip. I bought an Odyssey group 31 battery to work as our aux battery and I have tested that this battery will run my ARB for around 2.5 days without starting the car. We have been getting in the habit to always set it out when we park for eve a couple hours. Setup is 5 minutes or less.
You will need to visit the panel every few hours to turn the entire unit, to ensure ou are getting the best sun possible. That is the other reason I didnt mount the panel to my truck as you would very rarely ever be good light. The sun is not directly overhead very often. Of course, it would always be drawing some electricity, no matter how small.
I will probably mount an RV 100w panel to the rack whenever I decide that I am done with the RTT for a while.
Awesome.
I just hit the follow button on IG. I'm txvstrom on IG.
Living vicariously...
Offroading in canada???? Around toronto, ottawa, and montreal.
We are going from detroit to maine through canada and id love to get offroad.
Nice! So what did you have to do to get it to charge your battery since you mentioned that was an issue earlier in your post? The clamps that came with the briefcase set up didn't work? The whole thing looks like a plug and play.
Ahhh makes sense! Thanks for sharing man.You can do that just fine. but I didn't want to need to use the alligator clips at every stop. doesnt seem very safe or convenient to me. So we added a new connection to the charge controller, added a ring terminal connection to the aux battery, and a 20' extension chord to get it out into the sun. Ill find some amazon links. I also just picked up a socket kit that I will run into my grill, so we wont need to pop the hood at every stop. just hook up the extension chord to the outlet in the grill.
I used 2 of these.
one ring terminal I installed directly to the battery like normal. The other I cut off the ring terminals and fuse. Then I hooked up the cut/stripped wires to the solar charge controller's positive and negative ports. This gave me a new connection using the standard 2 pin socket system, at both the panel and the battery. Then just use the extension chord to link the two together.
Here is the chord that I cut and added to the controller.
Ahhh makes sense! Thanks for sharing man.
Sidenote: Living in south beach sucks for car guys. No space anywhere close to work. No such thing as a garage.
Uploaded my first youtube video. Very cringe worthy, but its a good start. I have more video before and after this day but im having issues getting the video edited. Need to just buy the adobe suite and be done with it.
