Bumper for $150

Found this site from a craigslist ad...

they look more like jeep people and not sure if they do 4runners...
but their bumpers start at $150.... kinda cheap no? might be worth getting a quote

I don't think they're all that bad. I mean, yes they're not the best looking, but if you're looking for something cheap and functional then this might be a good route for some people. The rear bumper with the tire carrier looks pretty clean.

And the basic bumper is cheap, but if you add all the extras up, it's going to put it in the $4-500 range.

x2 on this... they're ugly but if all you want is something to run a winch, this might be the way to go.

That thing even an insult to a Jeep. Poor guy has a whopping 130 hits to his sight and is probably thinking he's gonna be selling one of those "things" soon. All the while not realizing it's us laughing at it.:jaw drop:

For what he's selling, $150 is high.

This is usually an exaggeration, but I wouldn't let him pay ME $150 to put that on my truck. His bumpers are ugly chunks of steel with a few welds and angles bolted on to a frame.

I'm not sure WHAT to say about his winch mounts. If his friends are complimenting him on his workmanship, he needs new friends.

I think you could probably make that bumper for less and still have it look about as bad. 6 foot of rectangular tube, a couple cuts, frame plates, and weld it up. When its that simple, the fab work isn't terrible.

Yeah, they are pretty ugly, and I am not a fan of the swing away pivot design, but they look pretty burly (well, not the swing away...), and I could see getting one if I just wanted something to get me through the trail and didn't have enough money for a nicer one. I have been the poor kid trying to kludge together a bunch of junk just to get me where I wanted to go; I played hockey as a goalie with the crappiest pads I could find, and they weren't even close to regulation, but I played for several years and had the time of my life. I took a little more damage than other guys did, but it was worth it. I will give him credit for lowering the entry level for a front winch bumper; I haven't seen another one for $150

I think it is a little premature for him to be starting a business; he should wait til he has a more refined design, but as a hobby bumper, I don't think it is so bad. I can't see the welds, so I don't know about the real strength of it, but assuming they are ok, I bet you could beat on that thing and mot worry about damaging it (since it is only $150 after all).

Anyway, I certainly don't want one on my 4runner (and never will...), but I won't criticize him for putting off-roading more within reach for people.

I say good for him! Find a way to pay for your hobby. Ready to go into business.....maybe not just yet. Most of us vendors started out as garage fabricators. I can guarantee we have all turned out our share of scrap monsters. I think his prices are to low even for what he is offering. His target market seems to be a lot of XJ owners. They are... whats a nice word for cheap bas*@s Not all of them but a large majority. He is probably making 50 bucks or less a bumper if you consider his labor and time free. But he has tiny over head, Uncle Sam doesn't take half, FICA, and the rest of the madness. Hey send me his contact info I wanna see if he is hiring :bigok:

XJ rear bumper w/ tire carrier - Page 5 - Jeep Cherokee Forum

Here is a link of the style they build. I was emailing back and fourth, considering buying from them. They want 550.00 shipped w/tire carrier. My thoughts are Ill end ponying up the money for a CBI bumper and then build the tire carrier my self. So far Ive yet to see a better looking rear bumper than the CBI one. Thoughts?

Ok Jimmy, you have now pushed me over the edge.:hungry: This guys work is complete crap. CRAP! His work is going to get someone killed. His tire carrier ranks way up there on the scale of pure junk I've seen and he should seriously not be selling them. Hell, he shouldn't be giving them away. When that POS breaks, and it WILL, I hope there's nobody around to receive the hunk of crap through their windshield.
This kind of work is truly an insult to those of us that fabricate things for people and take the time to think about the consequences of crappy work.

A grade 8 bolt in single shear for a spindle??? Seriously??? That bolt, even if it were actually the appropriate size, isn't designed for that kind of load

I'm all for a guy learning the trade. Lord knows when I first welded, it was a train wreck. But to give any kind of props to a guy like this who is in way over his head is crazy. We'll see how nice you are when you read about his crap landing in someone's car and killing people. If his welding skills are anything like the rest of his understanding of metal working, it won't take long.:rant::iagree::boink:
