bumpy takeoff

I have a 94 4WD and when I start off it is like I am driveing on a wash board for just a few seconds. Would anyone make some suggestions for me, so that I will be halfway educated when I go to a mechanic. One more thing, for a while when I would turn my wheels really sharp I would hear a pop and I just thought it was because of larger tires on a narrow wheel base.
Thank You,
Teresa

Is it happening when you are turning from a dead stop, or going in a straight line, or both?

It is when I back up and then I turn the wheel very sharp to go straight. I thought for a while it was because I turned the wheel so sharp. It does not happen when I just turn the wheels normally. The fluttering like I am driving on a wash board is when I am stopped and start off.

Gotta be sure we're talking abou the same thing at the same time, here - this...

... is when you hear the pop? Or is it more of a grinding noise? If it's grinding, and happening while you're backing up with the wheel at full lock, I suspect your steering stop caps have worn off and are grinding on eachother. A quick dab of multipurpose grease will shut them up. If it's happening after full lock, as you're straightening out and pulling forward, it's probably a CV shaft. Your mechanic should be able to inspect the shafts and tell you for sure if that's what is causing the trouble before he charges you to replace them.

Then you get this when you're accelerating from a dead stop, and it doesn't matter whether you're turning or going straight, right? Could be a lot of things, do you feel it in the steering wheel? Or is it more of a whole body shake?

It must be the cv then because i come to a complete stop then turn the wheel very sharp and i get the pop. When i am stopped at a lite or stop sign and i start to accelerate is when it feels like i am on a rough spot in the pavement. Only last a second or two. Thank you for all of your time. I really appreciate it. Teresa

Well, if you're getting the "pop" when you're not rolling, that kinda points away from the CV shaft and more towards your steering rack. If that's the case, your mechanic should be able to stick it on the lift and determine that right away, though.

These things are always hard to diagnose on the internet, hope you find a good mechanic to help you out!
